Georgia’s upcoming matchup next week at Alabama will officially be at night. The SEC just announced a 7:30 pm EST game time for this showdown which will be the Bulldogs’ first night game of the season, but this might just be the last game they wanted at night this year.
Most teams want as many home night games as possible. This is typically when their fans create the best atmospheres that are the most difficult for visiting teams to play in, so having a home game at night can be a slight advantage.
On the flip side, Georgia would benefit from as many afternoon games when they play on the road. This in theory would quiet the home crowd down a bit which would make their life easier especially on offense.
After this weekend Georgia will have had four home games all get passed up for night games, but their first big road game of the year at Alabama will unfortunately be played at night. They would've been better off playing teams like Arkansas or South Carolina on the road at night since they aren't on Georgia's level this season, but Alabama will already be difficult enough to beat and now Georgia has to do it under the lights.
Georgia was given a prime opportunity to stake their claim as a national championship contender
While playing at Alabama at night might make winning a little more difficult, it gives Georgia an opportunity to prove to the college football world that they are a true national title contender.
Georgia is the No. 2 team in the country right now, so that by itself is proof that they can compete for a national championship this year. Some fans and analysts are pointing out that Georgia hasn't quite played anybody yet, and that is a fair point to make even if they are blowing every team out that they play.
Vanderbilt doesn't figure to be much of a challenge this week for Georgia, so when they travel to Alabama next week that will be their first true test of the season. So what better time to earn their first marquee victory of the season on the road at Alabama in a potential top 10 showdown under the lights with the college football world watching.
If Georgia can win this game then they will prove they are a legit national championship contender. Playing at night might make it a little more challenging to win, but these are the games that players come to Georgia to play in.
What's at stake when Georgia takes on Alabama in Week 6?
Both Georgia and Alabama are 4-0 entering Week 5 of the college football season. They both have to win one more game before they play each other, but if they both win this weekend this will be one of the biggest games of the season in all of college football.
This matchup will have a huge impact on the race to win the SEC. It also will have College Football Playoff implications as well. The winner will have a big advantage over the loser to make it to Atlanta to play for an SEC title, and when it comes time for the final CFP rankings they'll have a good chance at being seeded higher as well.
Alabama will want revenge after Georgia beat them in the 2025 SEC Championship game last season, but Georgia has revenge on their mind too since the Tide beat them in Athens last year.
Georgia is the No. 2 team in the country and they play Vanderbilt this weekend. The Bulldogs are favored by over three touchdowns at home, so this on paper should be another easy victory. Alabama however is ranked No. 7 in the country and has a tough test at No. 16 Mississippi State. That by no means will be easy for them to win, but if they come away with a victory that will only amplify this showdown in Tuscaloosa next week even more.
Kickoff between Georgia and Alabama is scheduled for 7:30 pm EST on Saturday, Oct. 10.
