SEC commissioner Greg Sankey appears to have won his battle against LSU and Lane Kiffin, and now it might be time to circle back to Alabama to punish them for doing far worse than LSU ever did.
After threatening expulsion from the conference on Tuesday LSU added two players to their roster on Wednesday to bring their grand total to 105. Those two spots were seemingly being saved for two former NFL players, but Kiffin and LSU decided to fall in line with the SEC's wishes for now.
Going back to the beginning of 2026 it was the Alabama basketball program making headlines similar to LSU. They however took it one step further by not just adding an NBA player to their roster but actually letting him play.
Alabama took it one step further than LSU
After a few years in the NBA's G-League Charles Bediako made the shocking decision to return to college basketball. He originally played at Alabama but decided to turn pro after the 2022-23 season, and after failing to make it in the league he joined forces with the Crimson Tide again.
This decision was met with public backlash similar to what LSU is experiencing, but Alabama pushed forward and actually played him in five games. During those games he averaged 10 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, so he was making an impact on their team.
The SEC filed a case against Bediako in support of the NCAA's eligibility rules and the court ruled in their favor which ended Bediako's return to Alabama. Since then the SEC hasn't taken any further action against Alabama, but if they were willing to potentially vote LSU out of the conference then maybe they should circle back and do the same with Alabama who actually played a former professional athlete who had no business stepping foot on a college basketball court again.
It's time to stop even thinking about bringing former pros back to college
The SEC has made their stance on former professional athletes coming back to college abundantly clear. They are completely against this idea and apparently will do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening. LSU football is one of the biggest brands the SEC has, and if they were willing to kick them out of the conference then likely nobody is safe.
Schools shouldn't have to be policed by the SEC though. There's a reason the vast majority of college fans and analysts are against pros returning to school because it devalues what makes college athletics so great. Professional leagues obviously have the better teams and players, but what makes college sports so special is that they are playing for the love of the game.
Sure college athletes get paid now, but the time frame one is allowed to play in college is limited while professional athletes can theoretically play forever.
Keeping former pros out of college is best for everyone. No one needs and no one should want to see them come back to school, so it is refreshing to know that Kirby Smart and Georgia have zero intentions in ever pursuing professionals under any circumstances.
