ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler revealed this week that the LA Rams intend on carrying three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster this season. That is significant because most NFL organizations only carry two on their active roster, but the Rams are leaning towards having three this year which would include former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett and f2026 irst round pick Ty Simpson.
Since the Rams drafted Simpson he and Bennett have been in a heated battle. They are looking to secure the backup role to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, and so far that job is still up for grabs. That competition however won't be completely settled during training camp as both QBs are expected to make the Rams final roster.
”The Rams plan to carry three QBs on their roster,” Jeremy Fowler said via espn.com. “Stafford and first-round rookie Ty Simpson are givens, but they like the progress Stetson Bennett IV has shown in what's now his fourth offseason with the team. Whether Bennett or Simpson is Stafford's primary backup is still to be sorted out.“
LA Rams make key decision on Stetson Bennett's future
The Rams have three ways they can handle Bennett this season. They can either cut him, keep him on their practice squad or name him to their final 53-man roster. As of now it is looking like he is going to make their final roster.
Bennett is entering the final season of his contract with the Rams, so staying on their roster this year is important. This gives him a chance to beat Simpson for the backup job all season long which would allow him to earn some playing time throughout the season. That playing time is the most important thing to him because he needs game tape to show the Rams and other organizations next offseason when he is looking to sign a new contract.
If Bennett was cut or put on the practice squad he wouldn't have a chance to show how good he can be. He also won't get much of a chance if he doesn't beat Simpson for the backup job either. The first step is earning a spot on their final roster though, then he can worry about beating Simpson. Thankfully he more than likely will make the final roster, and it also sounds like he's leading Simpson during training camp to become Stafford's backup.
The Rams have their first preseason game on Aug. 15 where Bennett and Simpson will have their biggest moments yet to prove themselves, but for now Bennett is expected to make the Rams final roster which helps him avoid the worst-case scenario
Stetson Bennett's career at Georgia shows he may just need one chance to prove himself
Bennett's career in LA is off to a similar start as his career at Georgia. He was never given much of a chance to play at Georgia when he arrived, and the UGA coaching staff preferred other players above him too, but when he finally got a chance to play that was all he needed to become a legend.
Bennett was drafted by the Rams in the fourth round. The Rams already had Matthew Stafford running their offense, so from the jump Bennett knew he was going to be a backup as long as Stafford was in town. Stafford is nearing retirement now with his current two-year contract potentially being his last, but instead of riding with Bennett until then they drafted Simpson in the first round.
This shows that the Rams still don't fully trust Bennett and may instead choose to build their future post-Stafford around Simpson.
All Bennett needs is one chance. The only way he will get that chance during the regular season is if Stafford gets injured, and that obviously is something no Georgia fan will be rooting for, but he will have his time to shine during their preseason games where the Rams will rest Stafford. If Bennett wins the backup job though he could get some playing time at the end of blowout games too.
This next year is everything for Bennett. All he needs is one chance and he could finally prove himself as the great quarterback Georgia knows he can be. It only took that one opportunity for his career to take off in Athens, and the same thing could happen in LA too.
