Georgia quarterback Carson Beck did not have his best game against Texas on Saturday. Thankfully it ended up not mattering as the Bulldogs still returned to Athens with a 30-15 win, but Beck is one player who needs to play better going forward.

Georgia fans weren't satisfied with his play, and even Beck hiself shared in his postgame press conference that he needs to be better.

The media also asked head coach Kirby Smart about the performance from Beck as well. But instead of saying anything negative about his quarterback, Smart came to the aid and defended his star player.

"I don’t agree with that,” said Smart via ugawire.usatoday.com when asked about Georgia winning with a poor performance from Beck. “He had probably eight or nine drops, and that’s hard on a quarterback. Psychologically, when you start a game and you have drops, sometimes it affects you.”

“I’m not saying he played perfect, but I saw a third-and-four scramble where he put his life and body on the line and made an incredible play. I think he played pretty good. But everybody will look at stats and everybody will look at other things, and they’ll have things to say and we’ll keep on playing with Carson Beck."

Smart brings up a good point that fans and media tend to focus too much on stats versus what actually happened on the field. Receivers dropping passes isn't Beck's fault, but it does reflect poorly in his stats. Also, that third-and-four scramble Smart mentioned only shows up on the stat sheet as a couple rushing yards without emphasizing how important they were on the outcome of the game.

Smart still did acknowledge that Beck needs to play better, so thankfully he isn't ignoring the issues the rest of us saw like his three interceptions. But if Smart isn't concerned about Beck going forward, the rest of the fanbase probably doesn't need to be either.
