After everything that went down last week after Georgia football defeated Auburn I was really interested to see how the UGA fanbase would react. We all know that Kirby Smart was not happy with the atmosphere created by the fans last week as Smart did not hold back from voicing his displeasures twice.

But fast forward to Saturday night and Smart only had positive things to say about the fans this time around.

"I was really impressed with our fans. I thought they really helped us. When we came out for kickoff, I thought there was great energy and we needed that. We obviously needed it throughout the game. I think it affected them."

Smart is right, the atmosphere created during the Mississippi State game on Saturday was one of the best this season. And it’s a good thing that was the case because UGA needed it.

Nobody expected Georgia to only win by 10, and the way the game was going it didn’t look like the final score would be that close. But Mississippi State made a tiny comeback and made it a little interesting late in the game.

So the fanbase doing their part in this game ended up being super critical. Mississippi State ended up having a couple delay of game penalties and a few procedural penalties on Saturday. These are the penalties that show you if a fanbase is actually having an impact on the game.

And Smart went as far to say that these penalties could have been the difference in the game.

I hope this energy becomes the norm for the remainder of the season because it’s clear the team is going to need it. Now with a road game against No. 1 Texas up next, it will be interesting to see how well the fanbase travels to Austin to make their presence known. They likely won’t impact the game like they did against MSU, but being loud even on the road can help the team morale more than you think.
