Georgia's search for a quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class is not going well. Kirby Smart has targeted many recruits with the same amount of aggression that he always does, but so far he has not found any success as Georgia's top targets keep choosing other schools.
That was most recently seen when top 100 QB Peter Bourque committed to Virginia Tech over Georgia just last week. It would be one thing if Georgia were losing their targets to elite programs, but losing to Virginia Tech was a punch in the stomach that no one saw coming.
This loss, on top of the handful of others before it, shows that Georgia has a serious problem on their hands. And instead of continuing to recruit in the same way he always does, Smart needs to change his overall perspective on how to recruit quarterbacks to Georgia going forward.
Kirby Smart's new perspective reveals that he doesn't need a QB in the 2027 recruiting class
Most schools usually look to add one quarterback in every recruiting cycle. This is a philosophy that Smart has lived by at Georgia as well, but it might be time for a change.
When looking at Georgia's quarterback room as a whole, is there actually a need for another quarterback?
Gunner Stockton will be gone after this season, but spring ball showed that Georgia's quarterback room is extremely healthy. Ryan Puglisi and Ryan Montgomery both looked improved compared to last year. Redshirt freshman Hesekiah Millender shocked everyone and looked like the best backup to Stockton. Then there is true freshman Bryson Beaver who looked really solid as well.
It's clear that Georgia will have four legit options to choose from next year when Stockton is gone. Any player Smart adds in the 2027 class wouldn't be able to compete for the starting job, so if all four of these current backups are on the roster next year then Georgia's quarterback room would be in a great spot even without a true freshman coming in.
The Transfer Portal is Kirby Smart's friend if he needs another QB
What happens if one of these four players decides to leave Georgia next year? Smart could just dip his toes into the Transfer Portal and add another quarterback that way.
It's been well documented that Smart doesn't want Georgia to be a program who relies on the portal to survive, but he will grab players at positions when he needs to. So if one of those four players does decide to leave Smart can find another player in the portal.
Georgia would also be in a position where they could get greedy and go after the best quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal too. Stockton will be gone so they will have an open competition next year to find their next starter, so the top quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal next year could see that and want to take a chance on Georgia.
But Smart at the very least could find another backup to add to the quarterback room which reinforces the fact that they don't need to add a QB out of the 2027 recruiting class.
5-star Jayden Wade is Georgia's most important recruit
The last reason why Georgia doesn't need to add a quarterback in the 2027 class is because of who is coming in the 2028 class. The Bulldogs already hold a commitment from Jayden Wade who is the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class, so the future of Georgia's quarterback room is already set with Wade.
Whoever Georgia could add in the 2027 class would not be able to compete with Wade, and that arguably is why they are losing so many recruitments right now. But the fact that Wade is coming is why Georgia doesn't need to add a QB in the 2027 class.
Georgia however would be in big trouble if Wade ever decommits or flips to a new school. The potential of that makes him the single most important recruit for Georgia right now, so Smart and his staff need to continue building a stronger relationship with him even if he is already committed.
At the end of the day it still would be nice for Georgia to add a quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class, but Smart is in a unique spot where he doesn't need to. So that change in perspective could be exactly what Smart needs to focus his time and energy elsewhere to try and land elite recruits at other positions.
