Kirby Smart credits Gunner Stockton on game-winning TD play vs Florida

Even though it was running back Chauncey Bowens who actually found the end zone, head coach Kirby Smart credited quarterback Gunner Stockton with the win.

In their semi-nail-biting victory over the Florida Gators, the Georgia Bulldogs nearly didn't call their game-winning play.

Before running back Chauncey Bowens ran the ball into the end zone to put the Bulldogs up 24-20, quarterback Gunner Stockton actually had another play called into his headset. After a quick-thinking audible by the quarterback, the Dawgs had scored, and Georgia was set up to pull off the win.

In the postgame press conference, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart credited Stockton with the game-winning play, while also giving Bowens a nod for the big-time run.

Gunner Stockton's quick thinking led to UGA win

"I thought that the check on the run for the touchdown was the second-biggest play of the game because Gunner [Stockton] saw something, changed the O-Line, picked it up, and it's really hard to defend that play with them stunning the line," Smart said. "It was a great check by him."

Smart went on to credit his O-Line for adapting quickly and perfectly picking up the rushers as Stockton handed the ball to Bowens for the touchdown.

"Chauncey’s one of the most consistent players on our team," Smart said about his young running back. "A great kid from a great family from a great school, and he loves getting better. He's happy for his teammates, he's really talented, he's in a talented room.”

In the win, Bowens accounted for 70 of Georgia's 138 rushing yards and scored the Bulldogs' only touchdown on the ground.

Meanwhile, Stockon earned 11 rushing yards of his own, while throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns through the air. The two offensive leaders were undeniably why Georgia defeated Florida in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and Smart couldn't speak more highly of them.

After taking on the Mississippi State Bulldogs this weekend, the No. 5 Bulldogs will turn their attention to hosting the No. 13 Texas Longhorns, who just pulled off a somewhat surprising win over the then-No. 9 Vanderbilt Commodores.

Stockton, Bowens, and the rest of the Georgia offense will have to be at the top of their game to get past the stingy Texas defensive front, while the defense will have to play at an elite level to slow down a Longhorn offense that has finally found its footing.

No. 5 Georgia and unranked Mississippi State are scheduled to kick off at noon ET on Saturday, Nov. 8, and the game will be available on ESPN.
