Georgia fans are excited for next season for a lot of reasons. Year two of Gunner Stockton seems very promising and Georgia's defense should be much improved as well. But potentially the one thing that is most exciting is the dynamic running back duo that has formed in Athens.
Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens have both returned for another season after some offseason speculation that Frazier would enter the Transfer Portal. They both had phenomenal seasons last year and that success has led many fans believe they could be the best running back duo in the country next season.
Kirby Smart however pumped the brakes on that talk during his press conference on Tuesday.
"Yeah, leadership, experience, third down. They don't have a lot of experience, so catching the ball out of the backfield, being better receivers, blitz pick-up schemes, yards after contact, and breaking tackles," Smart said via 247sports.com. "That's essentially what a back's measured by, is what do you get that the offensive line doesn't get for you? And that's how you become elite."
Kirby Smart pumps the brakes, pushes Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens to be even better
Could Frazier and Bowens become the best duo in the country next year? Absolutely they could, but Smart isn't ready to let them think they are now.
Smart still believes they have a lot of work to do if they are going to be the best duo in the country next season. This includes vast improvement in catching passes out of the backfield and getting more yards after contact. But whether he admits it or not, he knows how talented they both are. He knows they could go down as the best duo in Georgia football history, all they have to do is go out and prove it.
The main story next year will be Stockton who is back for another season as the starting quarterback, but this duo could be the difference between Georgia's offense being very good and their offense being electric this year.
