The Los Angeles Rams had one final preseason game on Saturday before the 2025 NFL regular season begins. Georgia football fans were hoping they would get to see quarterback Stetson Bennett take the field one final time before he slides back down to his third string role during the season, but they instead were greeted with a rude awakening on Saturday.
Instead of earning his third preseason start, Bennett was benched for the Rams final preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. Fourth string QB Dresser Winn got the start instead, and the Rams might be regretting that decision as they fell to the Browns 19-17.
Rams should've rolled with Stetson Bennett again
Bennett had been on fire for the Rams so far this preseason as he led them to a perfect 2-0 record before being benched. Bennett also is coming off the best performance of his NFL career against the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend when he completed 28 of 40 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
Even after this great performance though, head coach Sean McVay opted to roll with Winn instead to give him a chance at some valuable reps. But what's the point in that?
Winn is the Rams fourth string quarterback this year, so there is essentially no chance he ever sees the field. Sure Bennett likely won't see the field as their third string QB either, but Bennett is building for the future. There is a great chance that Bennett becomes the starter for the Rams in the coming years as the two quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart are aging and nearing the end of their contracts. So why not give Bennett as many reps as possible if that is their plan with him?
Georgia fans unfortunately won't get to see Bennett play much more the rest of this season. But that may not be the case in the future because he has done so well this offseason that either the Rams or another NFL team will have to give him a chance to be their starting quarterback soon.
