The No. 1 running back in the country in the 2028 recruiting class is Kevin Hartsfield. According to the 247Sports composite rankings he is also the No. 41 overall player in the country, so it's clear that he would be a big get for Kirby Smart if he happened to choose Georgia.

Since he is in the 2028 recruiting class it is still very early in his recruiting process, so there really isn't a lot of information out there. He however was just spotted wearing Georgia gear during a workout which could be a sign that he has a lot of interest in potentially playing for Smart and Georgia.

Earning Kevin Hartsfield commitment has to be a top priority for Kirby Smart

One problem with Georgia's 2027 recruiting class is the lack of talent they have from the state of Georgia. When looking at the top 20 players from the Peach State in the 2027 recruiting class, Smart has only been able to convince two of them to commit to Georgia.

Georgia will always be home to some of the most high school talent in the country, so he needs to figure out how to start taking more advantage of it.

Hartsfield is another opportunity for Smart to turn the tides and start recruiting the state better. All it takes is one big commitment from an in-state recruit for Georgia to potentially add even more really good players out of their backyard.

It won't be easy to convince any of the top players from the state to commit to Georgia because so many other elite programs will be recruiting them hard as well, but these are battles Smart has to find a way to win.

What would a commitment from Kevin Hartsfield mean for Georgia's future?

It's impossible to stress enough how big a commitment from Hartsfield would be. No one needs to be told how massive it would be to earn a commitment from the No. 1 running back in the country, but for Georgia it is much deeper than that.

On top of finding more success recruiting the state of Georgia, the Bulldogs would also have the No. 1 running back come to Georgia two years in a row. Kemon Spell is the No. 1 running back in the 2027 recruiting class who is currently committed to play at Georgia, so having both players in Athens at the same time wouldn't be fair to the rest of the country.

On top of that, Hartsfield would come to Georgia at the same time as Jayden Wade who is the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class. Georgia already has Wade's commitment, so if they can add Hartsfield they would have the No. 1 quarterback and running back in the 2028 recruiting class coming to Athens together. Again, that wouldn't be fair to everyone else.

There is still a lot of time left until Hartsfield will make his final decision, and it's impossible to confidently say how interested he even is in Georgia. But this video shows that he at least is a little intrigued by Georgia, and that is something Smart can work with.
