All offseason Georgia has had to listen to why Texas will be much better than them this season. Even though Georgia is 3-0 against Texas over the last two years it seemed like the vast majority of people were once again siding with the Longhorns this offseason.
That sentiment quickly changed at SEC Media Days though when Georgia was voted by the media as the preseason SEC Champion. Vegas then followed suit by giving Georgia the best odds to win the SEC too.
This was a bit of a surprise, but one media member perfectly explained why Georgia deserves this respect over Texas.
“They’re still the king, right,” SEC Network analyst Peter Burns said via dawgnation.com. “As much Texas wants to be there but Texas hasn’t been tough enough to go out there and punch Georgia in the mouth. They get bloodied every time they end up doing it.”

Burns said it better than anyone else. Texas has proven that they aren’t tough enough to hang with Georgia, and until they do then no one should expect them to be better than Georgia. Even Steve Sarkisian admitted that Georgia should be favored over them, but there are still countless fans and members of the media who are falling for Texas’ offseason hype machine.
Texas has a great roster on paper, no one can deny that. But Georgia also has a great roster too, so talent alone won’t be able to beat them. The Longhorns need to find an edge to propel themselves over the hump, but so far they just fall back on the media hype as the reason why they’ll finally beat Georgia and win the SEC.
That is something Georgia will never fall for. Even though they’re the favorite in the SEC now Kirby Smart won’t let that change their mindset. They’re going to attack every single day like they have everything to prove even though Georgia in reality has nothing to prove in the SEC. It doesn’t feel like Texas has acted like they have anything to prove since they joined the SEC, and that’s why they keep losing to Georgia.
Maybe this year will be different if they meet in the SEC Championship game, but a handful of offseason developments show that Georgia still has an edge over Texas.
Texas has proven they will do anything to finally beat Georgia
Two things have occurred this offseason that prove Texas will do anything they can to finally beat Georgia, even if it puts them in a bad light.
The first was when Sarkisian admitted he pushed some of his players out this offseason to make room for transfers he thought were better. There's nothing wrong with using the Transfer Portal, but to openly tell players to leave is taking things a bit too far. Smart would never do that which helps him build a better culture within their locker room, and that might be one reason why Georgia keeps beating Texas.
Texas also pushed for offensive lineman Cole Hutson to earn a fifth year or eligibility. Hutson just finished his fourth year at Texas after appearing in 48 games. He somehow though was able to earn a fifth year of eligibility even though he does not deserve it, so now Texas' offensive line will be much deeper and better.
Will this be enough to help Texas finally beat Georgia? Who knows, but it's clear that Sarkisian will stoop to new lows to finally beat Georgia and win the SEC.
