Georgia baseball is dancing their way into the Super Regional after winning three straight games in the Athens Regional this past weekend. Vegas rewarded Georgia for their performance by increasing their odds to win the College World Series to +600, but fans were still left scratching their heads because three teams all seeded lower than them have better odds.
Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
Vegas however has a perfectly sound explanation for why Georgia doesn’t have better odds and that’s because of how confident they are in the Bulldogs’ next opponent.
Vegas is in love with Georgia’s next opponent
Up next for Georgia is a Super Regional showdown against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have already played and beaten Mississippi State four times this season, but Vegas thinks this weekend could be a different story.
Individual odds for this series have not been released, but Vegas gives Mississippi State +1,000 odds to win the College World Series. These are the fifth-best odds in the country which shows that Vegas believes Mississippi State will be a tough test for Georgia this weekend.
Georgia has won six games in a row, so they clearly will enter this series with a lot of confidence. Their confidence though took a shot after star infield Tre Phelps was ejected on Sunday and subsequently suspended for game one against Mississippi State, and it’s that ejection that might be playing into Georgia’s National Championship odds as well.
Georgia is forced to survive game one without star infielder Tre Phelps
Game one in the Super Regional round is arguably the most important game of the season up to this point. Failing to win this game would mean Georgia would have to win two games in a row just to advance to the College World Series which is a tall task against a trending Mississippi State team.
If Georgia were to win game one though then their chances to advance would look extremely good.
Unfortunately Georgia will have to play without Phelps on Friday during game one. Fans might not be too worried initially since baseball is such a team sport that it’s hard for any one player to impact a game too much, but Phelps is one of Georgia’s players who does impact every game. His bat has been on fire and his play in the infield has been even better, so they will certainly miss him Saturday night.
Phelps is a future MLB player, so losing someone like him at this point in the season will be challenging to overcome.
Vegas still believes Georgia will advance this weekend against a really good Mississippi State team even without Phelps. It however will not be easy for them and that is why Georgia isn’t favored to win the College World Series right now even if they are the highest seed remaining.
