Running back Derrek Cooper has quickly become one of the most talked about recruits in the country. The five-star recruit will announce his commitment on July 20, and it appears Georgia still has a chance to win based on a last second report from On3’s Chad Simmons.
”Cooper is trending to Texas, but there is optimism on the Georgia side.”

Georgia still has hope with 5-star RB
Cooper will announce his commitment between Georgia, Texas, Miami (FL), Florida State and Ohio State on Sunday. However, almost every recruiting expert believes that Texas will be the team to win Cooper’s recruitment.
Simmons however shared in the above post that Georgia is still hopeful in this battle. That does not means UGA will win this recruitment, but it does mean that Kirby Smart and their staff haven’t given up hope yet.
Georgia could really use some good news when it comes to their developing rivalry with Texas. Sure UGA beat the Longhorns twice on the field last season, but this past week Texas has had the upper hand. This includes losing five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson to Texas as well as the Longhorns flipping defensive lineman James Johnson from Georgia as well.
Texas’s quarterback commit also just passed Jared Curtis in the recruiting rankings and the SEC media picked the Longhorns to win the SEC this week as well. So Georgia needs to break this cycle and find a way to come out on top over Texas for Cooper.
At this point though it would be silly for Georgia fans to get their hopes too high. Smart however has pulled off bigger recruiting upsets before though, so he shouldn’t be counted out yet.
Cooper will announce his final decision at 7:00 pm EST on Sunday, so be sure to tune in just in case Georgia finds a way to take down the Longhorns.
