Georgia and Florida are two of the top programs in the SEC. They also have one of the most heated rivalries in the conference as well, and they will meet for the 105th time in their history on Saturday.
Georgia holds a 58-44-2 advantage all time against Florida. That is a solid advantage for UGA in this rivalry, but the past decade has been dominated by the Bulldogs while Florida's been a program in distress.
Georgia looks to add to their dominant run vs Florida in the Kirby Smart era
Before Kirby Smart became Georgia's head coach they had a small lead in their series against Florida. That however has quickly changed over the last 10 years.
During Smart's tenure as head coach Georgia is 8-2 against Florida. This includes winning eight of the last nine meetings along with the previous five matchups.
Florida is a good program historically, so winning eight out of 10 games against them is something to be proud of. That is the case even knowing how bad they have been nearly every year during this stretch. The Bulldogs however won't have as easy of a time against Florida this year, but they have an opportunity to make it six straight wins against the Gators and nine victories in their last 10 tries.
Georgia vs Florida has true CFP implications this season
For one of the first times in the College Football Playoff era, Georgia’s matchup with Florida has true implications on the playoff race. The biggest reason why this hasn’t been the case in the past is because Florida has been bad since the beginning of the playoff, but this year they have a chance to make the playoff.
Florida does have two losses already this season, so they likely need to win out to make the playoff. Georgia on the other hand only has one loss and can afford to lose another game and still make the playoff. They however don’t want that loss to happen this week because then they would have to finish 4-0 this season to have a good chance at making the playoff.
So the loser of this game will see their playoff chances get much worse which adds to the importance of this game.
Georgia is close to a two touchdown favorite at this point according to Vegas oddsmakers, so the expectation is that they will win. The fact that they could eliminate Florida from the playoff race might be the best thing about this potential win though.
Game odds adjust periodically and are subject to change.
