Andrew Smart is quickly making a name for himself on the recruiting trail. If that name doesn't look familiar to you it should because he is Kirby Smart's son.
Andrew will begin his freshman year of high school this fall, so it will still be a few years before his recruitment really takes off. Typically it is impossible to know at this point how coveted a recruit is going to be when they haven't even started high school yet, but Andrew might just be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2030 recruiting class.
Look no further than his high school coach who just said that he's "never seen an arm like this" when talking about Andrew.
Kirby Smart can't slow down the Andrew Smart hype train
Kirby has done everything he can to keep his son out of the limelight. Last week at SEC Media Days he was asked about his son, but he quickly said that Andrew has a lot of work to do before he is good enough to play at college.
It isn't surprising to see Kirby try and slow the momentum that has been building in Andrew's recruitment. He is only a freshman, so he doesn't need any added pressure right now as he is getting ready to begin his high school career. Kirby knows that the time will come where his recruitment will take off if he earns it on the field, but for now he just wants him to be a normal kid.
Unfortunately when Kirby is your dad and you show you have a little talent throwing the football it's going to be impossible to stay out of the headlines.
Andrew already has three scholarship offers with one being from a Power Four school in Georgia Tech. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, who is a former Georgia assistant, also recently said that he plans to offer him a scholarship too.
So not only is his high school coach hyping him up, but he is getting attention from legit college football programs already. So no matter what Kirby does, Andrew's recruitment isn't going to slow down anytime soon.
Andrew Smart's recruitment may not be as straight forward as Georgia might think
It may feel like a done deal for Georgia if Andrew turns into one of the best quarterbacks in his recruiting class. Why wouldn't he want to play for his dad and the school he's grown up loving? On paper that may make sense, but in reality it isn't that simple.
There are so many reasons why Andrew wouldn't want to play at Georgia, but his dad could be the biggest reason why. Kirby is the best active head coach in the country. There is a lot of pressure around any quarterback who plays for Georgia, but that pressure would ramp up even more if Andrew is their quarterback. Would he enjoy that or would he want to avoid it and play elsewhere?
Every year there are recruits who decide to play for a different school instead of going where one of their parents played. They do this because they want to create their own legacy and not live in their parent's shadow, and Andrew could decide to do the same.
There is a world where he immediately commits to Georgia if he shows he's good enough to play for them, but there's also a world where he announces there's no shot he ever goes to Georgia. That is what makes his recruitment so intriguing, and it doesn't hurt that he has shown the potential of being a great player already.
