The LA Rams made one of the most shocking picks Thursday night during the first round of the NFL Draft. Even though they have reigning league MVP Matthew Stafford and a solid backup in Stetson Bennett, they still chose to draft former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick of the draft.
Selecting a quarterback in the draft made sense for the Rams after reports of current backup Jimmy Garoppolo debating retirement came to light, but using their first pick of the draft on a QB was not expected.
It turns out that head coach Sean McVay may not have seen this coming as Mike Florio with NBC Sports wrote.
“McVay almost always effuses positivity, about everything,” Mike Florio wrote for nbcsports.com. “Rarely does he deviate from projecting that vibe… McVay kept quiet. Most of his answers were short. He plunged his hands in his pockets while Snead (LA Rams GM) explained the reasoning for picking Simpson. As to the question of what it was about Simpson that made him the choice, it was Snead not McVay who provided the response.“
Sean McVay didn’t seem too pleased after the Rams drafted Ty Simpson
Why might McVay be upset with this pick? Maybe he already trusts Bennett enough as Stafford’s backup if he needed to come in and play this season. He also might be comfortable with Bennett becoming their next starter after Stafford decides to retire, which is a decision likely coming within a couple years.
If that is how he feels about Bennett then taking a quarterback this early in the draft was a complete waste. That is especially the case because Simpson will be making a lot more money than Bennett this year already.
There’s also a chance that McVay liked another quarterback more than Simpson who they could’ve taken in a later round as well.
All of this is purely speculation from Florio, but he believes McVay’s vibe after the draft was different than normal. He thinks McVay didn’t seem thrilled about this pick at all, and that could be a great sign for Bennett’s future in LA.
