Stetson Bennett's future drastically changed during the 2026 NFL Draft when the Rams selected former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round. This was a clear sign to Bennett that the Rams weren't sold on him being their quarterback of the future, but head coach Sean McVay didn't always make it seem that way.
McVay looked disgusted with this pick in the days following this selection. He even made it seem like head no say in this decision and would've gone a different route if it were up to him.
That however no longer appears to be accurate as the Rams reportedly called Bennett fore the NFL Draft to let him know they were going to draft Simpson.

Sean McVay may not be in Stetson Bennett's corner like it once seemed
This update to the chain of events that led to the Rams drafting Simpson changes everything. Instead of McVay acting like he didn't see this pick coming he actually very much had his hand in making this pick.
That is the worst news possible for Bennett because it means the Rams view Simpson as their future quarterback once Matthew Stafford retires.
McVay did confirm that they are not going to just hand Simpson the job though. He said that Bennett and Simpson will battle this offseason to be Stafford's backup, so in theory he has a chance to win that job.
But is anyone confident this will be a fair competition? Teams don't draft quarterbacks in the first round to be a third stringer, they draft them if they think they can be their starter for a long time.
It's nice to hear that Bennett theoretically has a chance to beat out Simpson this offseason, but it's hard to imagine a scenario where he is given a fair shot. So if he is going to be Stafford's backup this season he is going to need to significantly outperform Simpson over the next few months.
He is more than capable of doing that, but it is not going to be easy.
