Stetson Bennett is being doubted by a large contingent of football fans right now, has anyone heard that one before?

At the NFL Draft this year the LA Rams selected Ty Simpson with their first round pick. This sent a clear message to Bennett that his spot on the Rams depth chart wasn't secure and that he would have to battle Simpson to be Matthew Stafford's backup.

This is an important battle for Bennett to win as he is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but unfortunately he hasn't been able to separate himself from Simpson quite yet.

Stetson Bennett's offseason battle with Ty Simpson isn't going his way

Bennett should be expected to beat out Simpson this offseason, and if he can't then that is a terrible sign for his NFL Future.

The Rams are known for having one of the most difficult playbooks in the NFL. It reportedly can take quarterbacks up to a year to really learn their playbook and be comfortable with it, so that fact should give Bennett a clear edge over Simpson right now.

That however hasn't been the case so far as he has been unable to put any distance between himself and Simpson so far this offseason.

There is still a lot of time left this offseason, so Bennett still has plenty of time to beat out Simpson. But his career could be in serious trouble if he fails to beat out Simpson this year.

Why Stetson Bennett can't afford to lose the Rams backup QB job to Ty Simpson

Bennett can't afford to lose this competition with Simpson. Current Rams backup Jimmy Garoppolo is leaning towards retirement, and if he does that would allow either Bennett or Simpson to be Stafford's first backup this coming season.

And with Stafford nearing retirement age as well, that could open the door for this player to be the next starter for the Rams in a couple years.

The Rams drafting Simpson was a sign though that they aren't convinced Bennett is their quarterback of the future after Stafford. With Garoppolo debating retirement they needed to add another quarterback, but the fact they took Simpson in the first round shows they don't fully trust Bennett right now.

Bennett however can prove himself by beating out Simpson in their competition this offseason. If he can do that then the Rams might be left with no choice but to resign him after this season, but if Simpson wins this competition then Bennett will more than likely not be with the Rams next year.

At that point Bennett could sign with a new NFL team, but it's impossible to predict what could happen in that scenario. The best outcome for Bennett by far is proving himself enough with the Rams where they are forced to keep him, but that unfortunately has not happened yet.

Georgia fans will tell you that Bennett should never be doubted, so don't be surprised if he does start separating himself from Simpson very soon.
