After just two weeks of the college football season there is a new No. 1 after Texas took down former No. 1 Ohio State Saturday night. The Longhorns, who were the No. 4 team, jumped Georgia to take over the top spot as Georgia stayed put at No. 2 in the week three AP Poll.
No one in the Georgia football building will be too upset about this though. Not only does this give them some extra motivation but Texas was ranked No. 1 the last two years as well and both of those seasons ended in SEC Championships for Georgia and multiple wins over the Longhorns.
Texas has never lived up to the hype since joining the SEC
It's great to be ranked No. 1 at any point in the year, but the only time it actually matters is at the end of the season. Georgia has been ranked No. 1 at the end of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but Texas hasn't finished on top of the college football world since 2005.
Texas was ranked No. 1 during the 2024 season, until they played Georgia. The Bulldogs went to Texas during the 2024 season and beat the Longhorns on the road when they were the No. 1 team in the country. This wasn't the last time Georgia beat Texas this year either because they beat them one month later in the SEC Championship game as well.
Fast forward one year and Texas was the preseason No. 1 team in the country entering the 2025 season. The Longhorns weren't No. 1 anymore by the time they played Georgia, but the Bulldogs handed them yet another loss for the third time in two years. Georgia also won the SEC last season as well.
Ever since Texas joined the SEC they have been ranked No. 1 at some point in the season. Each year however has ended with Georgia beating Texas and winning the SEC, so maybe the Longhorns jumping them in the AP Poll isn't so bad after all.
Georgia could inevitably play their way to the No. 1 ranking
If Georgia wins all of their games they will eventually be ranked No. 1 in the country. The Bulldogs face a difficult schedule in the SEC again this year, so if they go 12-0 they would have a great argument to be the No. 1 team in the country.
They however will need Texas to lose to take the No. 1 ranking from them, and they unfortunately don't play during the regular season this year. Georgia and Texas could meet in the SEC Championship game again this year, so if both teams are still undefeated that would most likely be a matchup between the top two teams in the country.
Georgia the past few years has always won when they play Texas, but here's no guarantee that would happen again this year. History loves to repeat itself though, so if Texas needs to be ranked No. 1 in order for Georgia to beat them and win the SEC then that's a price that is easy for Georgia to pay.
Georgia can only focus on themselves though, and up next is their first road game of the season at Arkansas.
