Saturday marks the 16th time Georgia and Alabama will play since the turn of the century. Of those 16 games five of them will have been played at Alabama which may not seem like a lot, but most of these meeting have been played on a neutral field in Atlanta in the SEC Championship game.
Home field advantage is a real thing in college football. Everyone knows that playing on the road is difficult to do, but that is especially the case at Alabama who has one of the toughest environments to play at in the SEC. Combine that with the fact that Alabama typically has one of the better teams in the country and it's easy to see why winning in Tuscaloosa is difficult to do.
Georgia unfortunately has to deal with the disadvantage of being the road team in this weekend's showdown, but considering these teams played in Athens last year it might make sense that they'll be in Tuscaloosa. This however will be the third time these teams will play in Tuscaloosa over the last four meetings that have occurred on one of their campuses, and that doesn't seem fair.
Georgia deserved to be the home team this weekend instead of Alabama
It may seem crazy to suggest that Georgia should've hosted Alabama two years in a row in Athens, but that would've been the fairest thing to do. Alabama and Georgia played in Tuscaloosa in 2024 as well, but they also played at Alabama the time before that when they played on one of their campuses.
The SEC didn't seem to mind allowing Alabama to play Georgia at home two times in a row, so it doesn't seem fair that they won't repay Georgia the favor.
Georgia will get to host Alabama again in 2028, but if the SEC wanted to be fair they would've let Georgia be the home team again this season.
The SEC has made a few decisions the past few years that make it seem like they are trying to hand Georgia as many disadvantages as possible. When the conference expanded two years ago the SEC had Georgia play Alabama and Texas, the two best teams in the conference, each year while the Tide and Longhorns didn't have to play each other. Alabama and Texas don't even play each other this season either, so it seems like they're trying to make Georgia's schedule more difficult.
The SEC also hasn't given Georgia a night game yet this season either. Stadium atmospheres are at their best at night, so playing under the lights can be another advantage for the home team. Georgia hasn't received that advantage this year, but the SEC was more than happy to give it to Alabama this weekend.
Georgia has still won the conference two years in a row even after all of these disadvantages from the SEC. The Bulldogs have a chance to prove once again that they are still the top dogs in the conference with a win on Saturday even if the SEC seems to be doing everything they can to try and make their life more difficult.
