Georgia's on a bye this week which can be a bit depressing for fans, but there are still countless other intriguing games going on throughout the country that could impact their season. That still doesn't compare to watching Georgia play, and even though their bye week came at a perfect time it is still tough to go a week without UGA football.
This weekend however might not be the only bye week Georgia has this season. Sure there won't be another traditional bye week this year, but there's a chance they could get another "bye week" in one of two ways.
Georgia could get a bye in the CFP
The introduction of the 12-team College Football Playoff is when first round byes began in the playoff era. The top four seeds the past two years each got a bye into the quarterfinals, and Georgia was the only school to earn a bye each year. There's a chance Georgia could get a bye again this season as well.
The first edition of the CFP rankings haven't come out yet, but looking at the AP Poll the Bulldogs are just barely on the outside looking in as they are ranked No. 5 in the country. Georgia however would probably be a lock to get a bye if they win their remaining final five regular season games and the SEC Championship game, so this accomplishment is in their control.
History however says that Georgia may not want to get the first round bye in the CFP, so they may be better off having their second "bye week" one week sooner.
Georgia might be better off not making it to the SEC Championship game
All but two teams in every conference get a bye during conference championship weekend as the top two teams battle for their conference championship the first week of December. Georgia has been to the SEC Championship game five years in a row now, so recently they haven't been getting this bye week. They however might be better off having this "bye week" than getting a first round bye in the playoff.
Teams that got a first round bye in the 12-team playoff era are 1-7 in the quarterfinals. Georgia themselves are 0-2 in the playoff after getting a bye, so maybe they are better off playing in the first round instead.
In order for Georgia to not play in the SEC Championship game they will have to lose another game. That isn't something anyone shouldn't necessarily cheer for, but if it ends up happening it's not the worst thing in the world.
The most likely outcome at this point is that Georgia will make the SEC Championship game, win the conference for the third year in a row and get a first round bye in the playoff. That hasn't worked out too well the last two years, but that doesn't mean they won't find success this year and make a playoff run after winning the SEC.
It will be interesting to see how this unfolds this season, but for UGA fans this weekend might not be the only week they don't get to watch Georgia football.
