Stetson Bennett has gone down as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play football at Georgia. But it wasn’t supposed to be that way after he walked-on, but he was given an opportunity to play and he took advantage of it by leading UGA to two national titles.

Georgia’s offensive coordinator at the time was Todd Monken. He recently spoke about his time with Bennett and admitted that he is the most underrated player he’s ever coached. But he shared much more than that, going as far as to say that he tried everything he could to not play him.

”I underrated his skillset… He gets all the credit. I tried everything I could early in his career to not play him for a number of reasons, some he has to own but some I have to own. But ultimately he just kept competing. Nobody believed in him more than Kirby Smart, and he got better, and better and better.”

Todd Monken gave Stetson Bennett the compliment of a lifetime

How can a Heisman finalist quarterback that won two National Championships be underrated? All you have to do is ask the countless people who still say Bennett wasn’t the reason Georgia won those titles. They will tell you that any quarterback could’ve won with that talented of a team, but Monken is quick to say that they won those titles because of Bennett.

But it’s very interesting to hear that Monken never wanted to play Bennett in the first place. He didn’t expand on why, but he tried and tried to not play him all for Bennett to ultimately leave him no choice with how well he competed in practice.

Who knows how different things could’ve been had Bennett never started at Georgia. Could they have still won both national titles with someone else? Potentially, but Bennett was called on to lead this team and he gave the fanbase the greatest gift of all by bringing another title back to Athens after 41 years.
