Georgia is riding as high as they possibly could be right now three weeks into the season, but there's a potential upset looming in the SEC that could put a damper on the Bulldogs' quick start to the season.
Georgia has had a stranglehold on their rivals ever since Kirby Smart became head coach. This includes having a dominant 8-2 record against Florida which includes a current five game win streak. Florida is off to a good start this season as they are 3-0 after winning at Auburn this past weekend, but they have a date with No. 4 Ole Miss up next home.
Vegas however favors the Gators over Ole Miss as Florida currently is a three point favorite, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
Florida beating Ole Miss is good and bad for Georgia
Georgia fans love to see Florida struggle. Ever since Kirby Smart became head coach the Gators haven't been a program worth talking about on the national stage, and that has been quite nice. A win over Ole Miss this weekend would make them the talk of the town though.
Not only would Florida shoot up the AP Poll rankings if they win this game but they would prove that they are legit threats in the SEC race too. Georgia could eventually put an end to that later this season when they play Florida, but seeing the Gators get as much hype as they would if they beat Ole Miss is one of the last things Georgia should want to see.
On the other hand though an Ole Miss loss wouldn't be a bad thing for Georgia. The Rebels are one of the biggest threats to Georgia in the SEC this season, so seeing them pick up a loss could help them make it to the SEC Championship game later this season. Georgia does have to go to Ole Miss later this year which as of now feels like a game they could drop, but if the Rebels were to lose to Florida then that would help Georgia still make it to Atlanta even if they were to lose to Ole Miss later this season.
Florida has an opportunity for a ranked win that Georgia won't get for two more weeks
All Georgia can do right now is focus on themselves and this week that means giving all of their attention to Oklahoma. Their matchup against the Sooners is Georgia's first true test of the season, but Oklahoma's poor play the last two weeks has dropped them outside of the top 25.
Georgia likely assumed that Oklahoma would be their first chance at a ranked win this year, but that will have to wait two more weeks when UGA plays at Alabama. Florida however has a chance to earn one of the best wins in the country this week, and if they beat Ole Miss their resume would look much better than Georgia's.
At the end of the day that won't really matter because Georgia will have a chance to knock the Gators off their pedestal later this season. Even though there are reasons why Florida beating Ole Miss is good for Georgia it still wouldn't be fun to witness them earn one of the biggest wins in the country so far this season.
