Georgia took down Vanderbilt on Saturday 38-14. This win was deemed good enough by the AP Poll to keep UGA at No. 2 for the fourth week in a row as they continue to trail Texas who was on a bye this past week.
The SEC has seven other teams in the Week 5 AP Poll alongside Georgia and Texas. Up to this point Georgia still hasn't played a ranked opponent, but the new AP Poll shows that Georgia will face their fair share of difficult tests over the rest of the season.
Week 5 AP Poll shows how challenging the rest of Georgia's schedule is
As of now four of Georgia's final seven opponents are currently ranked. All four of these teams are ranked inside the top 16 as well.
These matchups include road games at No. 6 Alabama and No. 9 Ole Miss, a neutral site game against No. 16 Florida and a home date with No. 14 Missouri towards the end of the season.
Georgia's three other opponents (Auburn, South Carolina and Georgia Tech) don't pose much of a threat to UGA, so the Bulldogs season will likely be defined by these four games. If Georgia wants a good chance at making the SEC Championship game they likely can only afford one loss. Georgia can also only afford two losses if they want a great chance to make the College Football Playoff.
These four games will determine if Georgia makes the SEC title game and playoff, and unfortunately they face these four teams across their next five games. The good news for Georgia is that they are currently favored in every matchup the rest of the season, but they will be challenged far more than they have all season over the next month.
AP Poll confirms massive showdown between Georgia and Alabama
Up next for Georgia is a road date against Alabama. The Crimson Tide just blasted previously undefeated Mississippi State on the road, so as of now they look like the toughest game left on Georgia's schedule.
Georgia has remained at No. 2 in the AP Poll since the second edition of the rankings this year, but Alabama has slowly been climbing up the rankings all season. They find themselves at No. 6 this week which sets up a massive showdown in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Georgia is currently favored by 2.5 points according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but all that indicates is that this game is essentially a coin flip. If Georgia can win this game then they could be off to the races the rest of the season since Alabama might be the most difficult game on their schedule, but if they lose then their hopes of winning the SEC for the third year in a row will take a serious hit.
By this time next week we will know a lot more about how good this Georgia team is. If they can win at Alabama then the sky is the limit, but a close loss wouldn't be any reason to panic. If Georgia is embarrassed though then there will be a lot of uncertainty surrounding the rest of the season.
