Georgia entered Monday's matchup against Oklahoma arguably as the hottest teams in the country. They had just won 20 of their previous 21 games, but that hot streak to a crashing end as the Bulldog's suffered a 4-3 defeat to Oklahoma.
There are a lot of reasons why Georgia lost this game, and many of them were self-inflicted. The Bulldogs' defense was atrocious at times, but they ultimately only gave up four runs which isn't that bad. But one thing that was terrible was their approach at plate during this game, and head coach Wes Johnson made it known how frustrated he was with Georgia's offense throughout this game.
“When guys start to press, things go bad,” Wes Johnson said via x.com. “Need to be ready to hit a little more than we were tonight. There’s no need to hypee up elimination games… We’re going to go out and play Georgia Baseball tomorrow night like we have all year, and hopefully we’ll do it a little cleaner tomorrow.”
What can Georgia do to fix their hitting woes at the College World Series?
Georgia doesn't have much time to adjust as they have yet another College World Series game coming up on Tuesday. But if they are going to keep their National Championship hopes alive they need a quick solution to fix the hitting woes they experienced against Oklahoma.
Thankfully the fix for their offense is quite simple and it's all about their approach at the plate.
Throughout Monday's game against Oklahoma it seemed like all Georgia was trying to do was hit home runs. They did hit three long balls during this game, but that success led them to think that this was the only form of offense they could generate, and that is a terrible mindset to have.
Georgia's offense all season long has been centered around hitting home runs. That shouldn't change now, but they need to be smarter and pick their battles. They need to know when it's time to try and hit a home run and when they should try to just get the ball in play to manufacture some runs.
If Georgia can fix their mindset at the plate and show more patience then there is a good chance they will hit much better in their next game.
What's next for Georgia at the College World Series?
Georgia doesn't get the luxury of any time off at the College World Series now. After losing to Oklahoma they enter the losers' bracket where they will need to win three games in a row if they want to advance to the National Championship series.
That may sound incredibly difficult, and that's because it is. All Georgia can do is take it one game at a time because waiting for them in the losers' bracket is a team who is desperate for some revenge.
Up next for Georgia is a rematch with Texas who dismantled Alabama 14-2 on Monday. The winner of this game will advance to take on Oklahoma on Wednesday while the loser will see their NCAA Tournament come to an end.
Georgia and Texas will do battle at 8:00 pm EST on Tuesday, June 16 live on ESPN at the College World Series.
