This is the most exciting time for Georgia baseball since 2008. It’s been 18 years since Georgia last made the College World Series, but the Bulldogs are heading to Omaha later this week and are one of the favorites to win it all.
Don’t tell head coach Wes Johnson how important these next two weeks are for Georgia because he apparently has spent a lot of time at the start of this week recruiting future Bulldogs.
Georgia coach Wes Johnson said he did about seven Zoom calls with recruits yesterday and had phone calls with several more.

Wes Johnson put on his recruiting hat ahead of Georgia’s trip to the College World Series
The next two weeks will be the biggest stretch of Georgia baseball since the last time they made the CWS in 2008. Georgia has as good of a chance as anyone to win a National Championship, so all of their attention should be on what lies ahead in Omaha.
Johnson however decided to put his recruiting hat on to start this week. He’s not just recruiting a couple players though because he reportedly had upwards of seven Zoom calls and more phone calls on top of that.
Fans could argue that this is a terrible time to be recruiting. Johnson and Georgia have a chance to bring a national title home to Athens, so shouldn’t he be 100 percent focused on preparing for that?
That is a great argument, but Johnson has to ensure that Georgia’s future is secure well beyond this season, and there really is no better time to hit the recruiting trail than right now.
Why this is the perfect time for Wes Johnson to recruit for Georgia
Georgia baseball has never been hotter. Not only did they win the SEC regular season championship but they secured the conference tournament championship as well.
Then they entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 overall seed with immense expectations, and so far they have met them all. This includes going 3-0 in the Athens Regional and sweeping Mississippi State this past weekend in one of the best Super Regionals in recent history.
Recruits want to play for elite programs. They want to play for programs that are competing for championships, and right now no one is competing at a higher level than Georgia is.
So while Johnson needs to be focused on what’s to come at the College World Series, he is also making sure to capitalize on the momentum his program has right now. And if anyone actually thinks he isn’t spending a lot of time preparing for the CWS then they probably don’t know what kind of coach he is.
If Johnson plays his cards right Georgia will not only win a National Championship this season but they will be true contenders for years to come. And by the looks of it Johnson is well on his way to making that a reality for Georgia.
First pitch for Georgia’s first game at the College World Series is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at 8:00 pm EST against the No. 6 overall seed Texas Longhorns.
