Wes Johnson has revitalized the Georgia baseball program after just three years as head coach. This past season saw him get Georgia all the way to the College World Series for the first time in 18 years, and his reward is a contract extension.

The University of Georgia and Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson have agreed to a contract extension through 2032.

The exact terms of his contract have not been released yet, but Johnson's contract has been extended through the 2032 season. Johnson was set to make $1.35 million this season before this announcement, so it's safe to assume he will make more than that now.
This contract extension made perfect sense for both parties. Georgia has given Johnson everything he needs to run a successful program and Johnson already has UGA operating like one of the top programs in the country. He has won just about everything that a head baseball coach can win, but the only thing left to win is a national championship.
Georgia made it clear that they think he is capable of leading them to their second title in program history with this extension.
A national championship is the only thing left for Wes Johnson to win at Georgia
The moment Johnson stepped foot on campus Georgia became a legit baseball program. His first season they made it to the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. 2025 was a "step back" as they failed to get out of Regionals, but 2026 Johnson hit his peak.
Georgia won the SEC regular season title for the first time since 2008. Then they won the SEC tournament for the first time in program history before leading them to the College World Series for the first time since 2008 as well.
Georgia made it to the final four of the CWS before ultimately falling short to eventual champion Oklahoma. That leaves a national championship as the last thing for Johnson to accomplish, and Georgia clearly think he is the person that can take them there.
Johnson is bringing in the No. 1 Transfer Portal class for the second year in a row, so the talent is in Athens to make another run. All they have to do is put together another good season to give themselves a chance, but so far he has been the perfect coach for Georgia so there's no reason he can't win a national championship next season.
Wes Johnson's extension was met with much more praise than other coaches this year
Johnson wasn't the only coach to be extended this year as Mike Bobo and Glenn Schumann were both extended by Kirby Smart this offseason. It's safe to say that everyone was pumped to see Johnson get extended, but the same can't be said for Bobo and Schumann.
Bobo and Schumann have Georgia humming early this season, but after three years with no playoff wins some fans were ready for Smart to make a change with his coordinators. Instead he extended them.
Maybe that decision will work out, but it's clear that the fan base has more confidence in Johnson than Bobo or Schumann right now.
