20 years ago Georgia played Western Kentucky in football for the first time ever. The game ended in a 48-12 blowout in Georgia's favor and featured two backup freshmen quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox.
That was the one and only time Georgia ever played the Hilltoppers, until this Saturday when they face off for a second time in Athens. Looking back, a lot has changed with the world in those two decades in both football and in the real world.
BCS Era was in full swing, Florida Gators were Champs
As a Georgia fan it is funny to see how poorly the University of Florida has done since 2006. Unfortunately the Gators were the BCS National Champions that year, defeating Ohio State by a commanding score of 41-14.
The BCS model was still in full swing that year with no signs of a playoff ever occurring as well. The College Football Playoff would eventually be formed and consist of four teams in 2014.
Since 2006 Georgia took the step up and has won two national titles while Florida has a record of 7-13 when playing Georgia.
Fergie was atop the Billboard Hot 100
Aside from football, the Billboard Hot 100 was not all Ella Langley or Taylor Swift. Instead, it was Fergie. Fergie's "London Bridge" held the top spot of the list on September 2nd of twenty years ago.
Other notable songs that were just behind that was "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley at no. 2 and "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado ft. Timbaland at no. 3.
Pop Culture and Movies: Talladega Nights and The Office US
The No. 1 film in America over Labor Day weekend of that year was Mark Wahlberg's Disney sports drama Invincible. However, some other very notable shows and movies had America in a chokehold.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby had come out that year and was the best comedy movie of that year, and arguably of all time. It still holds today as a go-to for many movie lovers out there. On television, The Office was on season three and became one of the biggest sitcoms of all time. Also in its third season was Grey's Anatomy.
From flip phones to smart phones and Wii's to PlayStaton 5's, a lot has changed in two decades. However, Georgia looks to still continue to have success on the football field. We will see on Saturday if Georgia will have similar success against Western Kentucky as they did 20 years ago.
