The third edition of the College Football Playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday, and Georgia should expect to see some movement this time. Last week the CFP committee kept Georgia at No. 5 for the second week in a row, but after a 25 point win over Texas and a loss from No. 4 Alabama they will have no choice but to move the Bulldogs up.
But how high will Georgia climb? Could they move past one of the three undefeated teams that have been ranked above them for most of the year?
Georgia’s likely landing spot in 3rd College Football Playoff rankings
The CFP committee most likely will move Georgia up one spot to No. 4 in their updated rankings on Tuesday. Since Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M all won on Saturday, the easy choice is to keep them all above Georgia, but that may not be the right decision.
Ohio State and Indiana both cruised to easy victories this weekend, so there is no real argument for Georgia to move past them. Texas A&M on the other hand only beat 3-7 South Carolina by one point at home after trailing 30-3 at halftime. So even though that is an impressive comeback, they do not deserve to be rewarded.
The Aggies also have played absolutely no one through their first seven SEC games. All seven teams they have faced are in the bottom half of the conference standings, so it’s impossible for Texas A&M to have had an easier path up to this point. Georgia on the other hand has played a lot of really good teams including Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas and Tennessee. At some point Georgia’s resume has to be good enough to move them past an undefeated team who’s played no one.
Even if they have a good case to be higher, Georgia will likely land at No. 4 in this week’s CFP rankings. But at the end of the day it doesn’t truly matter because there is still plenty of time for Georgia to climb even higher by the end of the season.
