Thursday afternoon, Georgia football quarterback Carson Beck made the shocking decision to not just withdraw his name from the 2025 NFL Draft, but to also enter the transfer portal. Most people thought that if Beck would return to college to use his final season of eligibility that he would stick with Georgia considering he's been the starter for the last two years. But that clearly is not how this is playing out.
Since Beck entered the portal, a few teams have been labeled as contenders to land Beck while one team was also named as the overwhelming favorite. But whether Georgia fans actually want Beck to come back to Georgia or not, everyone is wondering why he doesn't want to return in the first place.
And that is a very fair question to ask considering all the positive developments seen so far this offseason.
Georgia's offense has gotten much stronger this offseason
Georgia's offense struggled a lot this season, so that could have been a reason why Beck wanted to start fresh at a new school. But Kirby Smart and his staff have already addressed the biggest issue with their offense in the portal.
So far this offseason, Georgia has earned commitments from two star wide receivers which includes Zachariah Branch from USC and Noah Thomas from Texas A&M. Both receivers will likely be starters for Georgia next season and will be an upgrade from the options Beck had this season.
On top of the upgrades at wide receiver, Georgia's running game should be in a great spot as well. Trevor Etienne announced that he is returning to Georgia for another season, so he and Nate Frazier will be an elite duo in the backfield. The Bulldogs will have some work to do to address the offensive line, but other than that Georgia's offense is looking very strong.
So it is interesting that Beck saw all of these big moves on offense this offseason and still wanted no part of it. But if these upgrades weren't enough to make Beck want to stay in Athens, then it likely is best that both parties are moving on from each other.
