Why Georgia is better positioned to win a National Championship than every SEC team

Georgia has the best blue chip ratio in the SEC this season, and that is the biggest reason why they are the favorite in the SEC and could win a National Championship.

A teams blue chip ratio is one of the greatest indicators of success. Blue chip ratio is the percentage of players that were four or five-star recruits out of high school, and the teams with the highest ratios historically are the ones winning National Championships. In fact, since this data was first tracked in 2011 every National Champion except for one has had a blue chip ratio above 50 percent.

The Bulldogs have almost always been near the top of the SEC blue chip ratio rankings, and entering this season they are No. 1 in the conference with a 69 percent ratio. That fact explains why they are the favorite to win the SEC and have a great chance to win a National Championship.

Georgia’s blue chip ratio is why they should expect great things this season

A higher blue chip ratio indicates that a school is very good at recruiting. That won’t come as a surprise to anyone at Georgia because they’ve been signing top five classes the moment Kirby Smart became head coach. Georgia also doesn’t lose many players to the Transfer Portal, so they’ve been able to keep their top end talent in Athens better than other schools.

That fact coupled with Smart being one of the best coaches in the country is why Georgia will always be able to compete for championships. Elite recruiting doesn’t guarantee any amount of success though, but it certainly helps. But combining elite recruiting with elite coaching is what has led Georgia to all of their success.

But the data reveals that if a team wants to win a national title they need to have a blue chip ratio above 50 percent. Georgia thankfully meets that threshold this season, and the fact they are No. 1 in the SEC shows they have a great chance to repeat as conference champions too.

How does Georgia in 2026 compare to their National Championship teams?

Georgia's national titles in 2021 and 2022 both met the 50 percent blue chip ratio. In fact, based on this data they were some of the most talented teams of all time.

In 2021 Georgia had an 80 percent blue chip ratio followed by a 77 percent ratio in 2022. Only 2020 Alabama and 2024 Ohio State had higher ratios, so that shows how elite these two Georgia teams were.

Georgia this year is a bit lower though at just 69 percent. It is still good enough to win a national title, but nearly half of the national title winning teams since 2011 had a higher ratio. But most of those teams didn't have as good of a coaching staff as Georgia, so that could make up the difference this year.

Georgia fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of playoff success over the past three years. The Bulldogs had a high enough blue chip ratio each year to win a national title, but they unfortunately came up short.

This year however could be different and as long as they continue recruiting at a high level Georgia will always have a chance to win a National Championship.
