Georgia football continues their climb up the College Football Playoff rankings after their win against Georgia Tech this weekend. The Bulldogs check in this week's CFP rankings at No. 5, which would earn them the 7-seed if the season ended today.
While this is a solid spot for Georgia to be in, the fear is that Georgia could still fall outside the 12-team field if they lose to Texas in the SEC Championship game. However, maybe this shouldn't be a fear at all based on what the committee did with TCU back in 2022.
TCU did not fall after losing Big 12 Championship game
Two years ago, TCU entered the Big 12 Championship game with a perfect 12-0 record. However, they went on to lose that game to Kansas State, a team they had already beaten earlier that season.
Instead of falling outside of the top four, the committee kept TCU at No. 3 because their conference championship loss came to a team they had already beat. On top of that, the committee felt that a team playing an extra game in the conference championship game should not drop in the rankings behind teams that were idle.
This is a great sign for Kirby Smart and Gerogia this season as they are in the exact same position as TCU from two years ago. Georgia has already beat Texas this season, and in dominant fashion on the road as well. So the assumption is that Georgia would not fall in the rankings enough to be excluded from the 12-team field if they lose to Texas on Saturday.
CFP chairman Warde Manuel even echoed this thought process druing the CFP rankings release show, so that shows that he is likely on the same page for Georgia this season as well.
However, it would be wise for Georgia to win the SEC Championship game this weekend instead. Not only would this earn them a top four seed and first round bye, but it would make it impossible for the committee to do something insane and drop UGA out of the playoff altogether.
