Coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs just did what Ohio State, BYU, and Notre Dame couldn't do this season. They won as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation and broke the season's curse. In the past three weeks, each of those teams lost while being the second highest team in the rankings, but Georgia ended that streak.
Dominating from the start, Georgia put a whupping on Ole Miss at 42-7 that should move them to the top of the College Football Playoff rankings.
Georgia has been unstoppable when ranked No. 2
The last team ranked No. 2 to win this season? Georgia did it four weeks ago against Alabama. Since then, Ohio State lost to USC, then BYU lost to UCF, and Notre Dame lost to BYU. Not even Pat McAfee thought Georgia would win this week. Boy, was he wrong.
With Notre Dame knocking off top-ranked Miami, it is essentially a lock that Georgia rises to No.1 in the country when the CFP rankings are released Tuesday night on ESPN. BYU and Ohio State continued to lose this week and could fall out of playoff contention altogether.
Kirby Smart has never been one to pay much attention to the rankings and certainly didn't this game as he coached the Bulldogs to a monster win on what many call separation Saturday.
Some teams spiral when they lose to an unranked team like Ohio State who jsut lost their third game of the season. Georgia didn't spiral though as Kirby Smart coached them up on a bye week and they came out and destroyed Florida and then drubbed Ole Miss on the road in the most dominating game of the season.
He knows how to use the shame and adversity of an upset to motivate his players to a higher level of greatness. His high-energy antics on the sidelines yesterday showed why the Bulldogs respond. He doesn't let up. Each play, each drive matters to winning the game.
Gunner Stockton had one of the best games of his career and held on to the ball. Chris Cole had his coming out moment for the Butkus award. Talyn Taylor emerged as the go-to threat at wide receiver. Over and over, players on both sides of the ball met the expectation of greatness Kirby Smart was laying out for them. He's got the resume already, but with games like this, it shows the whole nation why Georgia is the best team in college football.
