Georgia football once again made a lot of waves in the college football world on Wednesday. The biggest news came from the top ranked recruit in the 2026 class, who is adjusting his recruitment timeline to visit Georgia once again.
However, it wasn’t all good news as the Bulldogs also missed on a top transfer portal target as well.
Beau Atkinson commits to Ohio State
One of Georgia’s first transfer portal targets this spring was North Carolina EDGE Beau Atkinson. UGA brought Atkinson to Athens on a visit, but Ohio State did as well.
Unfortunately for Georgia, Atkinson did announce his commitment to the Buckeyes late Tuesday night.
On the surface this is a tough loss, but Georgia did already earn a commitment from Army EDGE Elo Modozie. So that could have played a role in Atkinson’s decision. Regardless, this loss isn’t the end of the world for Georgia, but it would have been nice to earn Atkinson’s commitment as well.
Major 5-star update
The No. 1 player in the 2026 recruiting class is offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell. Georgia is in Cantwell’s top four, and with his original commitment date set for April 30 time was running out for UGA to make their final move.
Cantwell’s commitment date however was pushed back two weeks on Tuesday to May 13. Why did he do this? So he could make one final visit to Georgia a few days before on May 10.
This shows that Georgia has a great chance to land Cantwell because there is no other reason for Cantwell to move his commitment date back. So hopefully Georgia uses this visit to their advantage, because getting the last visit could be the deciding factor in this recruitment.
NFL Draft hype
The 2025 NFL Draft begins Thursday night in Green Bay where the first round selections will be made. The Bulldogs have a great chance to witness three Bulldogs drafted during the first round as Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams and Malaki Starks all have been predicted to be first round picks.
On top of that, Georgia also has a chance to challenge their record set in 2022 when they had 15 players drafted. The chances of that happening might be slim, but if someone like Dan Jackson hears their name called then there is a serious chance Georgia breaks their own record.
Regardless of what happens, Georgia will once again be one of the teams with the most player selected, which is always a good reason to celebrate in Athens.
