College football is heading down a dangerous path, and unfortunately it is Georgia who has been helping lead the sport that way.
Money seems to be the only thing that big programs care about nowadays. They obviously need a lot of it to compete at the highest level, but there are too many decisions that are being made with the sole purpose of making more money. One of those recent decisions has been canceling non-conference home-and-home series and replacing them with neutral sites games instead.
Georgia and Ohio State however have a chance to change course and help save college football. They still have a home-and-home series scheduled to begin in 2030, and if they keep those games on the books they could help save college football from losing all of these marquee non-conference series.
Georgia needs to change course from how they've handled non-conference matchups
Georgia unfortunately has been leading the charge when it comes to canceling these non-conference home-and-home series. Last year they began by canceling on Louisville and NC State which they then followed up by scheduling one neutral site game against Florida State instead of playing their already scheduled home-and-home series.
Now there are talks of Georgia and Clemson canceling their two home-and-home series as well.
Georgia is doing this to collect a nice check as they will make millions of dollars to have these games played at a neutral site instead, but that isn't the only thing that should matter. Tradition and fan interest need to be prioritized more, and if Georgia cares about those two things they will keep their home-and-home series with Ohio State in tact.
Most college football fans are upset that teams are moving to more neutral site games, and Georgia unfortunately might just be the program most at fault for this. But they can help fix their mistakes by keeping their series with Ohio State in tact.
Why Georgia and Ohio State need to keep their home-and-home series in tact
Georgia and Ohio State keeping their series on the books would be a huge win for college football. This would guarantee two matchups between the two best programs of the last five years instead of just settling for one neutral site game.
It's likely just a matter of time until these teams meet in the College Football Playoff, so why not save the nuetral site matchup for then and enjoy something different in the regular season?
Both Georgia and Ohio State fans want to see these games played on their campuses. This not only would give so many fans a chance to see a matchup in person that they've never seen before, but they would also have an opportunity to travel to a new campus as well. That is what has made college football so great for so long, but college football unfortunately has been moving way from this.
Georgia and Ohio State have enough money. They've both proven they can win at the highest level in the NIL era when money is as important as ever before, so it's time they do something different. It's time they make a decision where money isn't the only motivating factor and give the fans what they want by keeping their home-and-home series as is.
