Georgia’s CWS run is the perfect example for why the NCAA needs a major rule change

The NCAA needs to treat teams like Georgia much better than they have been.

It’s time for the NCAA to consider a major College World Series rule change, and the Georgia Bulldogs are the perfect example why.

Georgia lost their second game at the CWS to Oklahoma Monday night 4-3. The Sooners deserved to win, but Georgia failed to make some plays that could’ve easily tipped the game in their favor.

But one thing stands out from this game, and it’s the fact that Georgia was the visiting team. The Bulldogs were a higher seed than Oklahoma, in fact they are the highest seed left in the NCAA Tournament, but they somehow were forced to bat first as the visiting team instead of being the home team. That is not right and it’s time for the NCAA to change that.

The NCAA needs to make a College World Series rule change to benefit teams that had better seasons

The home team has an inherent advantage in every baseball game. Batting last in every inning lets the home team know exactly what they need to do to keep pace with their opponent, and knowing this allows them to change their strategy entering an inning based on the score of the game.

The visiting team doesn’t have that luxury.

In the College World Series there is no traditional home and away team because the games are at a neutral site. So the NCAA has some made up rules that give every team a chance to enjoy the benefit of being the home team, but why should everyone be treated equal? The teams that had better seasons up to that point deserve the advantage of being the home team, but that is not how the NCAA sees it.

The NCAA believes that teams are rewarded enough by getting to host the Regional and Super Regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament. While that is a nice advantage, these host teams should be the home team in every single game they play.

Not only does that make things less confusing for fans, but it rewards them for having the better season.

At the College World Series there is no traditional home and away team, so the higher seeded team should be the home team every game. Teams that had worse seasons don’t deserve the right to be the home team just because the NCAA wants to make things fair. If you want to be the home team then do better earlier in the year, it’s that simple.

Who knows if Georgia would’ve beat Oklahoma if they were the home team, but the game could’ve been very different. Unfortunately for Georgia there isn’t anything they can do about it now, but to make matters worse they have to be the visiting team again on Tuesday at their next CWS game.

Georgia’s unfair CWS treatment will continue against Texas

Up next for Georgia at the College World Series is an elimination game against the Texas Longhorns. This is a rematch from the CWS game they played on Saturday which Georgia won 7-1.

Georgia was the home team for that game, but after being the visiting team against Oklahoma they somehow have to be the visiting team again against the Longhorns.

It apparently doesn’t matter that Georgia is a better seed than Texas. It also doesn’t seem to matter that Georgia already beat Texas. All that matters to the NCAA is that Georgia was the home team the last time they played, so they are giving Texas a chance to be the home team this time.

That is a ridiculous reason to make that decision, and it’s time for the NCAA to change the rules right now.
