Georgia and Texas are the odds on favorites to win the SEC this season. Since Vegas posted their first set of odds at the end of last season these two teams have been the clear favorites to win the conference in 2026.
Georgia however has been just behind Texas as Vegas has somehow given the nod to the Longhorns for the third year in a row.
Vegas did make a recent change to these odds for both Georgia and Texas, and UGA fans will be happy to hear that their odds improved. Unfortunately Texas's odds also improved as well. In fact, their odds improved by a wider margin as Vegas thinks they are a bigger favorite than they originally were.
Georgia's odds to win the SEC don't make any sense
Earlier this offseason Georgia had +330 odds to win the SEC. Fast forward to today and the Bulldogs now have +320 odds to win the conference. This is a very small adjustment but it shows that Vegas believes Georgia has a better chance to win the conference now than they once did.
The gap between Georgia and Texas however is now wider than it has ever been.
Texas originally had +310 odds to win the conference, now they are +290. The gap between Georgia and Texas is still pretty small, but the Longhorns somehow are bigger favorites than they've ever been.
But how does that make any sense?
Georgia deseves the same respect that Texas is receiving
What has Texas done to deserve this level of respect? The only explanation is that Vegas is buying into the Texas offseason hype, but that's exactly what they did the last two years and Georgia still won the SEC.
A big reason for the hype surrounding Texas is because a lot of people believe quarterback Arch Manning will be the best player in the country. That however is a wild thing to suggest at this point in the offseason about a player who just had surgery. No one knows how good or bad he will be coming off this surgery, so to prop him up as the Heisman Trophy favorite may be a bit extreme.
Texas also hasn't even proven they can win the SEC yet let alone beat Georgia. The Longhorns were the favorites to win the conference in 2024 and 2025 and what ended up happening? They lost to Georgia three times and watched them hoist the conference championship trophy each year.
Georgia on the other hand has proven to be the best program in the SEC. They also have the most production returning from last season which is significant considering they won the conference. But that fact doesn't matter to Vegas because they still love Texas and aren't willing to give Georgia the respect they deserve in the SEC or on a national scale.
Georgia will have a chance to prove Vegas wrong again this season. The Bulldogs aren't scheduled to play Texas during the regular season, but Vegas believes they will be the two teams that meet in Atlanta this season to play for a conference title. And if the past tells us anything this will be yet another matchup against the Longhorns that Georgia wins.
