The spread between Georgia and Alabama has been on the move for much of this week leading into Saturday's showdown. Georgia opened as a small favorite over Alabama on Sunday, but then Vegas kept bouncing back and forth between the two teams as they couldn't decide who should be favored.
The spread eventually landed in Alabama's favor as they were predicted to beat Georgia by 1.5 points throughout most of this week. This spread was on the move once again Saturday morning though as it changed one more time as Alabama is now favored by 2.5 points, according to the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Alabama became an ever larger favorite over Georgia leading into kickoff
In reality being favored by 2.5 points isn't all that much. This amount is relatively close to what Vegas awards the home team for home field advantage, so Vegas is essentially saying that if Georgia and Alabama were to play on a neutral field it would be a 50-50 game.
Regardless of the semantics, Alabama is the favorite over Georgia entering Saturday's showdown. They have been the favorite for most of the week, but with just a few hours before kickoff they became a larger favorite than they've been all week.
That could be due to the face that backup running back Chauncey Bowens along with wide receiver Isiah Canion have been ruled out for Georgia, but the Bulldogs have plenty of depth to sustain these losses and can still win this game without them.
Being the underdog could be good for Georgia
Saturday marks the first time that Georgia has been an underdog all season. In fact, it's been a long time since they've been an underdog in general.
All 14 games last season Georgia was predicted to win. This includes their regular season game against Alabama which they lost last year, the rematch against the Tide in the SEC Championship game and their playoff loss to Ole Miss. In fact, the last few matchups against Alabama they have been favored in including their game in Tuscaloosa in 2024.
This ultimately hasn't mattered all the much since Alabama has still been able to win a vast majority of the games even when Georgia has been favored. So maybe being the underdog is what Georgia needs.
Georgia has been predicted to beat Alabama since the start of the season. Alabama didn't become the betting favorite until about Monday this week, so the Bulldogs saw themselves be named the underdog after oddsmakers were loving their chances against the Tide all season. This could be the extra dose of motivation that Georgia needs to finally beat Alabama in the regular season for the first time in Kirby Smart's tenure.
If Georgia can win they will finally be able to put all their struggles against Alabama to bed. This would be their second win in a row over the Tide, and even though Alabama's record against Smart would still be much better, Georgia would be ecstatic with beating Alabama in back-to-back matchups.
Game odds adjust periodically and are subject to change.
