Gunner Stockton’s injury update adds a new layer to Georgia’s outlook this season

Georgia can’t afford for Gunner Stockton to play like he did against Auburn again this season.

Gunner Stockton was forced out of the Auburn game by the officials after the first play of the game after taking a shot from an Auburn defender. He returned three plays later and played the rest of the game, but Saturday marked the worst game of his season.

Some fans have speculated that he may have been injured from that early hit and that caused him to struggle at times during this game. Kirby Smart however confirmed on Tuesday that Stockton isn’t injured at all, so instead of being able to blame an injury for his performance Georgia now has to face the reality that a three turnover performance is possible for Stockton.

Gunner Stockton has a lot to prove the rest of the season

Saturday was the first time Stockton has had three turnovers in one game in his career. It was also the first time he’s thrown two interceptions in the same game as well. Instead of blaming an injury though Georgia has to face the reality that he just had a bad game.

Every player has bad games from time to time, and even if Stockton played poorly he doesn’t deserve the sole blame for this loss. Had he played just a little better though Georgia probably would’ve won this game, but three turnovers were ultimately too much to overcome against an average Auburn team.

Now Georgia has to face the fear that Stockton could have another disappointing game with multiple turnovers later this season. If he can turn the ball over three times against Auburn then he could do it again later this season against even better teams like Ole Miss, Florida and Missouri.

Stockton however has to prove that Saturday’s game against Auburn was a fluke and he is more like the version we saw against Alabama in Tuscaloosa the week before.

A rough game against Auburn may have been what Gunner Stockton needed

Stockton had arguably the best performance of his career one week before losing to Auburn against Alabama. There’s a chance though that this great showing got to his head a little bit.

In the long run his off day against Auburn might be what he needed to find even more success this season. Now he has firsthand experience with how quickly things can change from playing extremely well to turning the ball over three times and being one of the biggest reasons why Georgia lost, so the next time he has a great game he will be sure to not let it get to his head.

It would’ve been nice if Georgia still beat Auburn even with Stockton’s struggles, but there’s no changing that now. All they can do is move past this game, learn from their mistakes and get ready to play Florida in two weeks.

All of Georgia’s goals are still in front of them even after this loss, but this game could be the wake up call they need to propel them to another SEC title and national championship.
