Has Georgia football done enough to make the College Football Playoff?
Georgia football has officially finished their regular season after their epic 44-42 win over Georgia Tech in eight overtimes. And while a 10-2 record doesn’t feel as good compared to the previous three seasons, Georgia should still feel good about it considering how difficult their schedule was.
But now that Georgia is heading into postseason play, there’s one thing on everyone’s mind. Has Georgia done enough to make the College Football Playoff?
The Bulldogs still have the SEC Championship game next weekend to improve their resume, and a win in that game will automatically qualify them into the 12-team field. But what if Georgia loses next weekend? Has UGA done enough to make the CFP even with a loss to Texas or Texas A&M in the SEC Championship game?
Should Georgia feel good about making the CFP?
Kirby Smart and Georgia arguably have the best group of wins this season in the country. This includes wins against three top 12 teams in Clemson, Tennessee and Texas. However, the Bulldogs do have two losses this year, and the CFP committee hasn’t been afraid to punish Georgia for them already.
The one thing on Georgia’s side with these two losses is that they came against two teams currently in the committee’s top 15 and on the road. So those losses are far from being labeled as bad losses.
The committee however already has Georgia comfortably in the 12-team field as the 8-seed, and that was before their win over Georgia Tech last night. Even though Georgia did struggle against the Yellow Jackets, that shouldn’t drop Georgia at all. If anything, it should move them up because No. 6 Miami (FL) lost to the Yellow Jackets a few weeks ago.
But regardless, Georgia should feel very good about making the CFP, even if they lose next week. Most college football experts agree that a team shouldn’t be punished for losing their conference championship game because most teams don’t play to begin with. So why should a team like Tennessee leapfrog Georgia when they don’t even play?
So adding that context to Georgia’s already impressive resume, and Georgia fans shouldn’t worry about missing the CFP at all. The only thing they should worry about is if Georgia will earn a first round bye or not, which would be really nice for a UGA team that could use some time off.
