Arguably the two best programs in all of college football right now are Georgia and Ohio State. That fact alone makes their upcoming home-and-home series that is scheduled to begin in 2030 the most exciting future games in all of college football.
Unfortunately Georgia has been making serious changes to their non-conference schedules over the last few months, and this series with Ohio State is the last one standing that could be the next to fall.
Ohio State fans could suffer the same pain Georgia fans have become numb to
A few months ago Georgia had the most competitive future non-conference schedules in the country. Not only do they have this series with Ohio State on the books but they also had home-and-home series with Florida State, Clemson (twice), NC State and Louisville. On top of that they will always have their annual matchup with Georgia Tech to end the season as well.
These series however have slowly been going away thanks to the SEC adding a ninth conference game. NC State and Louisville were the first to be cancelled followed by the Florida State series a couple weeks ago. Georgia and Florida State did replace their series with a neutral site game in 2028, but that's hardly as exciting as a home-and-home series.
Then on Friday reports came out that Georgia and Clemson are discussing moving their future series to a neutral site as well.
No changes will come to Georgia's annual meeting with Georgia Tech, so that leaves Georgia's home-and-home with Ohio State as the last series standing. And unfortunately for Georgia and Ohio State fans it may just be a matter of time until those games disappear too.
Sacrificing Georgia's series with Ohio State isn't worth it
Georgia's original motivation to cancel their series with NC State, Louisville and Florida State was so they could avoid playing 11 Power Four opponents in the same season. Even Ohio State never does that, so this reasoning made a lot of sense.
But they clearly aren't afraid of playing 11 Power Four teams in one regular season because they added their matchup with Florida State in 2028 and are trying to find a way to keep Clemson on their future schedules as well.
So Georgia's matchups with Ohio State may not go away completely, but it could be moved to a neutral site game instead.
What could this change look like? It could be as simple as scheduling one neutral site game for these two teams to play with their main motivation being to make a lot of money. Georgia's matchup against Florida this season in Atlanta is reportedly making both programs $7.5 million each, so this could be something Georgia and OSU look to do as well.
Georgia and Ohio State could also schedule two neutral site games as well. One could be played in Atlanta and the other could take place in Indianapolis so each program has one game that is close to home, but even that isn't nearly as exciting as playing a true home-and-home series.
This decision however is likely all up to Georgia though. Ohio State is finishing their home-and-home series with Texas this season and will begin one with Alabama next year, so they aren't afraid of these series. Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork even said in the past that he doesn't want to cancel their series with Georgia.
Kirby Smart and Georgia unfortunately have been changing all of their non-conference series, so Ohio State fans may soon learn the same pain that Georgia fans have become all too familiar with. And even if they do schedule a neutral site game (or two) which would bring both schools more money, it doesn't feel worth it to eliminate these monumental home games that have made college football so great for so long.
