Georgia hit their first speed bump of the College World Series as they lost an intense matchup against Oklahoma on Monday 4-3. This defeat sent Georgia to the losers’ bracket where they will face Texas in an elimination game on Tuesday.

Georgia has already beaten Texas at the College World Series 7-1, but if they want to keep their season alive they will need to beat the Longhorns again. Unfortunately for Georgia, Texas is riding high entering this matchup after dismantling Alabama 14-2 on Monday.

Georgia will have to be ready for what could be their most difficult game of the season. Fans may want to see some changes to their starting lineup after a shockingly bad game at the plate on Monday, but Wes Johnson more than likely will ride with the guys who have gotten Georgia this far.

Georgia projected starting pitcher vs Texas in CWS elimination game

Dylan Vigue, RHP (4-1 record, 4.73 ERA)

Georgia got two excellent outings from their starting pitchers to begin their run at the College World Series. In fact, Joey Volchko and Caden Aoki did so well that Georgia hasn’t had to go to their bullpen yet in Omaha.

In a perfect world Volchko would be ready to go for an elimination game like this, but after throwing nine innings on Saturday this would be too quick of a turn around. That leaves Georgia with a few options to throw out at starter, and Dylan Vigue could be the most likely guy to get the nod.

Vigue struggled a bit the last time he played which was in the Super Regionals against Mississippi State where he gave up three earned runs in two innings. He however has had a lot of big moments this season as well, so he is someone Georgia can trust to start on the mound this game.

Georgia has every pitcher available, outside of Volchko and Aoki, so expect Georgia to make quick pitching changes if needed and send everything they’ve got at Texas.

If Georgia can win this game then they could look to get Volchko back out there on Wednesday in another elimination game against Oklahoma, but at the very least he’d be available on Thursday against the Sooners again if they make it that far.

Georgia probable starting lineup vs Georgia in the College World Series

  1. Tre Phelps - Third baseman
  2. Ryan Lujo - Center fielder
  3. Kenny Ishikawa - Left fielder
  4. Daniel Jackson - Catcher
  5. Michael O’Shaugnessy - Designated hitter
  6. Ryan Wynn - Second baseman
  7. Brennan Hudson - First baseman
  8. Kolby Branch - Shortstop
  9. Ryan Black - Right fielder

Georgia’s bats really struggled Monday night against Oklahoma. They did hit three home runs, but their failure to get runners on base led to each long ball only being a solo shot.

The top of Georgia’s lineup especially has not lived up to the level of production they had all season, and that has led fans to want some changes. But at this point it’s too late in the season to move things around too much. Johnson needs to trust the guys that have gotten Georgia this far, and that is what he is most likely to do.

The only significant move that makes sense is sliding Daniel Jackson back to fourth in the batting order. He has been the best hitter for Georgia all season, and after his 447-foot home run on Monday he needs to be put in a better spot to try and rack up more RBIs.

What does Vegas think of Georgia’s CWS rematch against Texas?

Texas was predicted to win their first CWS matchup on Saturday, but after Georgia’s dominant victory Vegas has learned their lesson.

The Bulldogs are currently favored by 1.5 runs and are given -120 odds to win, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The over-under for this matchup is set at 11.5 runs as well.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

The winner of this matchup will move on to face Oklahoma on Wednesday, June 17 where they will need to beat the Sooners twice to advance to the National Championship series. The loser will see their season come to a crashing end.

Everything is on the line for both teams tonight, so fans better strap in because this has the potential to be one of the best games of the season.
