Stetson Bennett's future with the LA Rams became very uncertain the moment the Rams drafted quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft. Since Bennett has just one year left on his contract this looked like a sign that his time in LA was essentially over.

But head coach Sean McVay said he would have a chance to compete against Bennett for the backup job, and according to McVay's most recent update it sounds like he has been turning heads this offseason.

”I think he’s done a really nice job,” McVay said via theramswire.usatoday.com. “He’s earning the confidence of his teammates in terms of commanding the huddle. Then, he’s done a lot of good stuff in terms of reading with his feet. Dave Ragone does such a good job with those guys as a whole but both he and Ty have had good growth. Stetson especially, I think he’s had a really good last couple of weeks, and I’ve been proud of him.”

Ty Simpson isn't the only hurdle in Stetson Bennett's way with the Rams

According to McVay it sounds like Bennett is doing a great job in his battle with Simpson. He didn't say for sure if he was winning or losing that battle right now, but what coach would at this point in the offseason?

All Bennett can do is continue competing, and every Georgia fan knows he will keep doing that.

Simpson however isn't the only hurdle in Bennett's way right now. Current backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still hasn't made a final retirement decision yet, and until he does Bennett will be the third string quarterback at best in LA. It would be really nice if he did retire so Bennett could have a chance at some minutes during the regular season, but Garappolo hasn't made his final decision yet.

Current starter, and fellow Bulldog, Matthew Stafford's future is also a bit uncertain as well. He is nearing retirement age himself, but after winning the MVP award last season and signing a new contract this offseason he could be around for a few more years still. And as long as Stafford is in LA Bennett will never be the starter.

Bennett however has to find a way to overcome these hurdles, and the only thing he can do is have the best offseason of his career.

The next few months are the most important in Stetson Bennett's career

These next few months of the NFL offseason are the most important for Bennett. He won't get too many chances to prove himself during the season because Stafford will be the Rams starting quarterback, but if he wants to remain in LA after this season he needs to beat out Simpson for the backup job.

Even if he does beat out Simpson though there is still a chance the Rams decide to ride with Simpson after this year. At that point Bennett will be able to sign with any NFL team he wants, so he also needs to put his best foot forward right now so other teams will be interested in signing him.

All Bennett needs is a chance. He is yet to have an opportunity to be a starter in the NFL, but Georgia fans know what he is capable of if he is given a chance.

That chance may not come with the Rams, but if he continues to impress and outperform Simpson then maybe he will be he Rams future starter once Stafford retires.
