Seth Williams committing to Georgia gave them a new reason to flex on their rivals

Friday evening Georgia earned a commitment from four-star defensive back Seth Williams. He chose Georgia over Clemson who one month ago looked like the favorite, but then Kirby Smart came on strong and got this recruitment to the finish line.

Williams’ commitment shot Georgia’s recruiting class up the 247Sports rankings all the way to No. 9 in the country. This is the first time in months that they’ve been in the top 10, but that’s hardly the most exciting thing that took place.

On Georgia’s way up to No. 9 they passed both Auburn and Florida in the recruiting rankings to once again assert their dominance over their rivals.

Georgia passed Auburn, Florida in recruiting rankings courtesy of 4-star Seth Williams’ commitment

Before this commitment Georgia had the No. 12 recruiting class in the country. Auburn was just above them at No. 11 with Florida sitting at No. 10, and no one in Athens needs to be told how unacceptable it is to have a lower ranked recruiting class than them.

Williams' commitment however shot Georgia's class all the way up to No. 9. Now the Bulldogs can flex on both of their rivals who have been taking shots at them for the past few months while they've been ranked higher.

Georgia also passed LSU as well who was ranked No. 9 because of Williams' commitment, and leapfrogging Lane Kiffin is just as fun as well.

Williams is the 20th player to commit to Georgia's recruiting class while both Auburn and Florida currently have 25 commits. So not only is Georgia's class ranked higher, but they are ranked higher with five less commits. That shows how much better the average player in Georgia's class is compared to their rivals' classes, and if Georgia is able to match the number of commits they have then the gap between their recruiting classes will grow even larger.

Georgia fans owe Kirby Smart an apology

Kirby Smart has been ridiculed for the past few months. College football fans across the country questioned if he had lost his recruiting touch, and at times it looked like they had a point.

Georgia fans however were beginning to turn on Smart for the first time in his career. Georgia has signed a top five recruiting class nearly every year Smart has been their head coach, so when they were barely inside the top 25 not long ago it had fans seriously panicking about the future. Combine that with the fact that Georgia hasn't won a playoff game in three years and fans were beginning to become really upset.

Georgia fans however owe Smart an apology now.

Complaining about the product on the field never made sense. Winning playoff games is hard to do. Even a program like Georgia shouldn't be outcast if they fall short a couple times, especially if they just won two recent National Championships and have continued winning the SEC.

Yes the goal is to win a National Championship every year, but Georgia didn't "fail" if they fall short.

Smart is still the best coach in the country. He also is the best at developing talent as well. Maybe he isn't the No. 1 recruiter in the sport, but he is still one of the best recruiters in the country too. Georgia is spoiled, and sometimes fans act like the program is in a downward spiral if one thing doesn't go perfect.

That however will always be an overreaction. Georgia is as healthy as they've ever been, and anyone who ridiculed Smart for a slow start to this recruiting class owes him an apology.
