This offseason Steve Sarkisian stole Will Muschamp from Georgia. Muschamp was a member of Georgia’s defensive coaching staff for both of their National Championships under Kirby Smart, and he was even the defensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023.
The last two years he took a step back into an off the field analyst role, and this offseason Sarkisian swooped in and hired him to be Texas’s new defensive coordinator. And so far Sarkisian is acting like this is one of the best hires he has ever made.
"A great addition," Sarkisian said via 247sports.com. "It was everything I thought this hire could be. Will and I, philosophically, are very similar. We believe in a style of defense that is in-your-face, that is tough, that is hard-nosed. We believe in coaching hard. But yet, we believe in having a relationship and rapport with the players on the team and Will does that. It has been great having him."

Muschamp was one of the biggest reasons why Georgia has been so successful over the last few years. The Bulldogs have been absolutely dominant on the defensive side of the ball, and that is arguably the biggest reason why Georgia has won so many championships.
Georgia knew that Muschamp was going to leave at some point. It made no sense for him to be an analyst for the rest of his career, but it’s a shame to see him go to Texas.
Not only that, but Sarkisian openly bragging about how great he’s been makes his departure to Texas even worse. But to take the cake, Muschamp once admitted leaving for Texas was an “easy decision” which is heartbreaking to hear after the run he had in Athens.
Will Muschamp could take Texas to the next level
Texas has been Georgia’s biggest competition in the SEC since they joined the conference two years ago. They were the preseason favorite in 2024 and 2025 to win the conference; and they nearly won the SEC in 2024, but so far they haven’t been able to overcome Georgia.
Muschamp however will undoubtedly give them a better chance to finally get over the hump.
Georgia and Texas don’t play during the regular season this year, but as of now Vegas believes they are the overwhelming favorites to make the SEC Championship game. And if that happens does anyone think for a second that Muschamp won’t be extremely motivated to knock off his former employer?
Texas has been missing a stellar defense since they joined the SEC. It’s nearly impossible to win big in this conference without a really good defense, so adding Muschamp could be Texas’s last hope to fixing their defensive problems.
Georgia unfortunately knows how talented Muschamp is and how likely he is to make Texas much better. Only time will tell if he ends up being the reason Texas finally wins the SEC, but everyone in Athens knows how worrisome it is for him to be coaching at Georgia’s biggest competitor in the conference.
