Five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas committed to Ohio State on Saturday. According to 247Sports he is the No. 2 QB in the 2028 recruiting class, the one player ranked above him is Georgia commit Jayden Wade. Vargas and Wade will now battle for the top ranking in their class, and so far it is an extremely tight battle.
Wade is the No. 2 overall recruit in the country while Vargas just jumped to No. 4 in a recent rankings update. After Vargas the next closest QB is No. 49 in the country, so for now it is a battle between Wade and Vargas, and Georgia and Ohio State, to be the top ranked quarterback in the country.

As of now Wade and Vargas are the only two quarterbacks in the race for the top spot. That’s been the case for the past year now, and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.
Wade committed to Georgia in November. He was the No. 1 QB at the time and still is today, but as time has gone on Vargas has been closing the gap.
At the time Wade committed to Georgia he was the No. 1 overall recruit in the country and Vargas was No. 10. Since then Wade’s slipped back one spot while Vargas has climbed six spots to No. 4. Their junior seasons this fall will play a big role in how their rankings adjust over the next few months, and next summer’s recruiting events will likely change things as well.
For the rest of the 2028 recruiting cycle though they will both likely be battling for the No. 1 ranking, and it’s safe to assume they’d both love to claim that title.
Georgia and Ohio State share a similar concern with their 5-star QB commits
While Georgia and Ohio State will watch their quarterback commits battle for the No. 1 ranking, these programs share a similar concern. Since they are both five-star recruits they will have the attention of many other programs who will try and flip them, and they need to hold on tight and not let their commits go.
Ohio State likely won’t have to face those concerns head on for the next few months since Vargas just committed, but those worries will eventually grow. Georgia on the other hand has been fending off other schools all summer with Michigan and Auburn being the most recent schools to make a big push.
So far Georgia’s been able to hold off every school, but with 16 months to go anything is possible.
Georgia and Ohio State probably don’t care that much if their commit is No. 1 or No. 2 in the class. Both players are extremely talented, so no matter where the recruiting sites rank them it won’t change how badly they want them to remain in their class.
It won’t be easy for either school to hold onto their commit, but these programs will face similar challenges throughout the next year as they look to get their quarterback commit to sign with their program in December 2027.
