Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has somehow tuned into the most hated coach in Athens. Even though Georgia’s defense deserves most of the blame for last year’s exit in the College Football Playoff, a large contingent of fans continue to blame Mike Bobo every chance they get.
Unfortunately for them, Kirby Smart extended Bobo through the 2028 season this offseason. So whether they like it or not he is here to stay, and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy thinks Georgia fans should be ecstatic about that.
“So I kind of trust their evaluation. I trust their scheme,” Greg McElroy said via dawgnation.com. “I think (Mike) Bobo, much to the chagrin of many Georgia fans, I think he does a really good job.”
Georgia fans will hate how Greg McElroy feels about Mike Bobo
McElroy feels that the hate some Georgia fans give Bobo isn’t warranted. He believes that he is a great offensive coordinator, and there is a lot of data that backs this up.
But the biggest reason why he thinks Bobo is a great coordinator is because of how good he is at evaluating talent. McElroy pointed to Zachariah Branch last season to prove his point.
Last year Branch transferred to Georgia after not having too much success as a wide receiver. He was electric in the return game, but he hadn’t proven himself at his actual position yet.
Bobo however believed in him still, and when he came to Georgia he turned Branch into the single season receptions record holder at Georgia. Would a bad offensive coordinator be able to do that?
This likely won’t stop Georgia fans from voicing their displeasure towards him, but Smart has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t care what they think.
Kirby Smart doesn’t care how Georgia fans feel about Mike Bobo
When Smart extended Bobo this offseason he made it clear how much he trusts him. But he didn’t stop there as he spoke in great length at SEC Media Days multiple times last week about how annoyed he is at those who dislike him.
He even took a pretty direct shot at Georgia fans to express just how little he cares about their opinion.
The biggest complaint fans have is that Bobo hasn’t been able to win a National Championship at Georgia in his three years as Smart’s offensive coordinator. Those are the expectations at Georgia, but it’s a bit of a stretch to want him fired over that.
Does that mean every coach at Georgia should be fired? Defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann took over the defense by himself in 2024, why isn’t he getting any hate?
Speaking of defense, Georgia lost to Ole Miss 39-34 in the CFP last season. 34 should be enough points for Georgia to expect to win, but their defense giving up 39 points is what lost them this game. But Bobo received so much more blame than Schumann for this loss, and that makes absolutely no sense.
Bobo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. That should be great news because he has shown he is capable of leading an offense that can score lots of points when the lights are shining brightest in the playoff, but he unfortunately is being hated by a fair amount of fans who think they know better than Smart.
