Two things were made abundantly clear at SEC Media Days last week. A large contingent of Georgia fans are furious that Mike Bobo is still the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and Kirby Smart doesn't care what they think.
Smart was asked many questions at SEC Media Days about Bobo and if he actually believes that he's good enough for Georgia. And every time he expressed just how much he trusts Bobo and knows that he is the perfect coach for them.
Smart's patience finally reached a boiling point though. After yet another question about the criticism Bobo receives from Georgia fans he finally snapped and unloaded a fiery take in his defense.
Kirby Smart on the criticism of OC Mike Bobo: 👀🔥

"Do you think Mike Bobo gives a shit what anybody says? He doesn’t care what they say about him. I’m not worried about it. Go ask some of these other coaches around the country—they’d take Mike Bobo in a heartbeat." https://t.co/O9Ljqy9O9C pic.twitter.com/HbqwFmaRcg
Kirby Smart is tired of Georgia fans constantly complaining about Mike Bobo
Smart is clearly tired of having to defend Bobo from Georgia fans. The biggest complaint fans have about Bobo is that his play calling is predictable and that he hasn't been able to lead Georgia to any playoff wins in his three years as Georgia's play caller, but none of that hate is warranted.
The complaints about Georgia's lack of playoff success are fair, but does Bobo deserve the blame for it? Georgia's offense could've been better no doubt, but their defense was atrocious in their loss to Ole Miss last season. Kirby Smart has also been out-coached as well in the playoff the last two years too, so it's impossible to explain why Bobo is the only coach blamed for these losses.
Georgia fans also think Bobo's plays are easy to predict, but even if that's true does it really matter? The Bulldogs had a top five offense in the country in efficiency just last season, so why does it matter what plays he's calling if they are working?
Even if all of this is true it hasn't stopped some fans from expressing their extreme displeasure for Bobo. He has turned into their scapegoat even though he doesn't deserve it, but Smart has made it abundantly clear that he believes in Bobo no matter what anyone else says.
Kirby Smart's belief in Mike Bobo couldn't be more obvious
Just how much does Smart believe in Bobo? Earlier this offseason he extended Bobo's contract through the 2028 season. So for the next three years Bobo will be Georgia's offensive play caller, and that unsurprisingly sent a lot of fans into a panicked frenzy.
But it shouldn't. Georgia has won the SEC the last two years with Bobo calling their plays, and in his first year in 2023 they had a perfect 12-0 regular season record. Sure they have zero playoff wins during the last three years, but it isn't fair to expect Georgia to win a National Championship every season.
Winning a national title is Georgia's ultimate goal, but that shouldn't be the only thing used to determine if a season was successful or not. Georgia keeps beating their rivals. They also keep winning the SEC. If they continue to not find any playoff success over the next few years then maybe it will be time to move on from Bobo, but now is not the time to fire him and it's time for Georgia fans to give him the respect he deserves.
