Mike Bobo’s puzzling message to Gunner Stockton didn’t accomplish what it intended

This offseason Mike Bobo has been pushing Gunner Stockton to be willing to take more shots down the field, but on Wednesday he revealed one thing he told him that doesn't make a lot of sense. Instead of encouraging Stockton to be confident in himself, he instead told him that he's "not Josh Allen" and "can't make" the same throws as him.

Allen is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, so Stockton obviously isn't as good as him. It however is strange for Bobo to be this direct about what throws he isn't able to make. Bobo's goal was to tell Stockton to be careful about when he takes shots down the field, but the way he told him this is a bit confusing.

Mike Bobo’s message to Gunner Stockton completely missed the mark

Bobo has a point, but he chose the wrong way to express it. Instead of just showing Stockton what throws he should shy away from he instead said that he isn't as good as someone else and just flat out can't make the same throws as them. That could make Stockton less willing to take shots down the field this year.

Both Bobo and Kirby Smart have discussed wanting Georgia's offense to be more explosive this season. A lot of that falls on Stockton who needs to be more willing to throw the deep ball instead of tucking the ball and running the second he feels any pressure. Bobo's right that this doesn't mean he should throw the deep ball every chance he gets, but he could've shared that message in a much better way.

Now Stockton has to overcome his offensive coordinator questioning how good he is and how good he can become, and that just doesn't seem right.

Gunner Stockton can still learn from Mike Bobo’s coaching mistake

Even though Bobo didn't coach Stockton up in the best way, he can still learn from him. Sure Bobo could've made his point in a much better way, but Stockton has to ignore what came out of Bobo's mouth and focus on his point.

Even though Smart and Bobo are emphasizing being more explosive and willing to take deep shots it doesn't mean Stockton should take a chance down the field whenever a receiver has an inch of space. He still needs to be selective about when to take those deep shots based on the game situation and which defender is covering his receiver down the field.

Bobo might end up wishing he never told Stockton he can't make certain throws if this ultimately hurts his confidence. Stockton however needs to persevere because he is the key to Georgia's offense finding a new gear this season.

So far in fall camp Georgia's offense has been struggling to move the ball against their defense. This however has more to do with Georgia's defense, specifically their secondary, showing they could be one of the best defenses in the country. Going up against this strong of a unit every day in practice could end up being one of the best things for Stockton and his offense, that is as long as his confidence isn't hurt too much from what Bobo said to him.
